HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1978-05-31, Page 21BY AB WYLDS This Week in Ripley In the past week every- thing seemed to happen by twos - at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley last Tuesday through Wednesday morning were two former Huron Township men, then Friday and Satur- day evening there were reception dances, and two weddings involved Huron folks on Saturday and Sun- day afternoons. Mrs. George McLean Sr. of Ripley had the misfortune to fall while visiting at Ferndale near Lion's Head. She was suffered a fracture of her right shoulder and in Wiarton Hospital it was placed in a cast. She is presently at the home of, her granddaughter, Mrs. Nancy Tout, in Kincardine. Ripley area folks wish Jennie.well in. her recovery. On Wednesday aftenroon, May 24th, the funeral serv- ice, for a former native of Huron Township and a few years back, a resident in Ripley before going to Palm- erston, Harry Scott, was held at the Ripley MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home. In charge of the • service was Rev. Hugh Nugent of Knox Presbyterian Church which Harry attended while here. Interment was in Kincardine Cemetery. Surviving are his brother Ben and nephew Morley who live on the pioneer family homestead on the Kincardine -Huron boun- dary in the far north east corner of Huron Township; a sister, a daughter in Gowan- stown and also other relativ- es. Among these is a nephew — machine. Buried deep under at Melfort, Saskatchewan, whom Harry visited with during the summers a , few years back. Harry was a railway engineer driving the big locomotives on the Tor. onto Montreal run, before retiring to Ripley. Among the places where he stayed in Ripley were those of the Thompson home on Malcolm Street, George McLean, and Mrs. Amelia Cumming. A friend of ,this writer, Harry sometimes helped hive a swarm. He had learned beekeeping from his father who kept a few, hives on the pioneer farm. Harry had reached the age of 91. When he was physically able to get around Harry was well liked and known up street in Ripley. Also on Wednesday after- noon Rev. Bob Putman was in charge of the funeral service for .Norval Nesbitt, native of the Reid's Corners area. The service was held in Pine River United Church. Prior to that the late Mr. Norval Nesbitt rested at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley as also did the late Harry Scott, where friends called. On Tuesday of last week Morley Mills of Georgetown and former native of the Clarks area, concession 12 west in Huron Township, called here while visiting friends in Kincardine and Ripley. Attending Ripley Continuation School at the same time, Morley always calls, however, this writer was out at the apiaries so he talked with Fran, among many others in 'the area. Visiting with their aunt, Mrs. Donalda Gossell, in Ripley, for a few days last week, were Mrs. Morag Maclntyre of Los 'Angeles, California and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Grieve of Burlington. Mrs. Harriet Moore ' is visiting her son, .John, in Ottawa. • Miss Marion Munn of Toronto has returned to her home in Ripley for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Reg. Then on Saturday evening the recep- tion dance for Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gallant was held over in the Ripley Huron Com- munity Centre Compleic with Elliott Carruthers' orchestra playing and a good crowd there. The wedding of Laurie Coiling and Mike Gallant was held in Ripley on Saturday afternoon. Saturday being such a warm sunny summer day, a long parade . of "Wedding” cars toured the village streets. Miss Chfistena Robertson is visiting with . friends In Toronto according to reports received. Last Sunday morning the annual anniversary service was held at Knox Presbyter- ian Church in Ripley with a large congregation out. Miss Mary Lynne McLean of Ripley is a patient in Kincardine and District Hospital. On Tuesday afternoon. of Joy Bushell, and Mr. John Ackert at Bervie United Church last . Saturday after- noon. of years he was employed at the Golden Glow Egg Grad- ing Station in Ripley before he took over the position of caretaker or custodian. He was 63 years of age. Murdock will be missed in Ripley. On the long Victoria week- end the Ripley Scouts with Scouter Gordon van Horne and assistant Larry Nixon in charge, enjoyed a trip to the Wingham Scout Reserve. The Wingham Scouts hosted the District camp. Scouter Ross Foxton of Wingham was camp chief and Tom Cornwall, the head scouter with Ken Foxton the camp cook.
