.Bruce, Dufferin, Grey Lung Assoc.
Vluiiteer work not a luxury, but a necessity
"Volunteer work is not a
luxury, it is a necessity".
Mrs, Norma Lytle, secretary-
' treasurer of the Ontario Lung
Association quoted Mr. E. G.
Burton, president of .Simp-
sons Ltd., when she addres-
sed the ninth annual meeting
of the Bruce, Dufferin,Grey
Lung Association on May 16,
1978, at Tolmie Memorial
Presbyterian Church, Port
Elgin, Ontario.
Sixty members and guests
heard Mrs. Lytle define
society two ways: meaning
the kind of life we live in
organized communities
where interests and purposes
are common to all; and,
society meaning an,organiza-
tion; in our case the lung
association. A "social" per-
son, as defined by Dr.
Samuel Johnson in his dic-
tionary of 1755 is "a person
fit for society". We are
beginning to, realize how
deficient life on this earth
would be if we allowed the
mechanization of living to
deprive us of the contacts we
gain in voluntary association

meeting
Dr. Madeline Hardy, as-
sistant superintendent with
the London Board of Educa-
tion, was guest speaker at
the annual dinner meeting of
the Huron -Perth chapter of
the C.E.C., held in St. John's
United Church in Stratford
on Wednesday evening, May
17.
The subject of Dr. Hardy's
• address was, "Special Edu-
cation
ducatsn A,Matter of Team- '
work". She's e.s,rd that
special services fo`rthe ,
exceptional child includes
everything from enrichment
for the gifted to training to
help the trainable -retarded
reach their potential.. Since
medical science can now save
lives of children who would
not have survived in former
times, and since our society
places a high value on
academic achievement the
educational system must find
ways to help many children
who may be handicapped
mentally or physically.
• The effects of alcohol and
drugs on young people have
been much in the news but
we are not fully aware yet of
the conseqqences for the
unborn children of the pres-
ent generation.
Dr. Hardy reminded her
audience of • the importance
of the role of the parents and
. how vital it is that there be
co.mniunication between
house and ' school and the
special services department.
Julia Henry thanked Dr.
Hardy and presented her
with a gift. President Randy
Smith took charge of the
business which included in-
stalling the new slate of
officers for the 1978-79 year.
These were president, Mrs.
Julia Henry, Stratford; vice
president, Mary Flannery,
Seaforth; secretary, Regina
Whaling, Stratford; treasur-
er, Mrs. Verna Kane; mem-
bership convener, Mrs. Beryl
Nicholson.
Louise Wilson, Marion
Zinn and Mary Bere attend-
ed from this area.
with our neighbours. Our
richest experiences come
about when we act with other
people to achieve some
common goal. Some people
feel they have nothing spec-
ial to contribute, but as
Longfellow put it, "Give
what you have, it may be
better than you dare to
think". Mrs. Lytle was
introduced to the assemblage
by Mrs. Wm. Wardell of
Owen Sound.
President W. R. McKenzie
of Wiarton introduced head
table guests, and Dr. J. D.
Robinson, Flesherton, joined
him in welcoming Mrs. J. E.
Galbraith of Port Elgin, who
served as Executive Secret-
ary of Grey County TB and
Health Association from.1952
- 1966. She was Mrs, Bertha
Brown at that time. This TB
and Health Association later
amalgamated with Bruce and
Dufferin counties to become
the present lung association.
Miss Beatrice Scott wel-
comed guests to the dinner
on behalf of the church, and
said Grace. Miss Scott is an
elder of this church after
returning from missionary
work in India.
