Reid's Corners hosts District annual of Bruce South W.I.
Reid's Corners branch was
hostess for the District
Annual of Bruce South
Women's Institute.
The roll call of the District
Directors was answered by a
thought on the theme; about
one hundred and twenty
attended. the meeting with
guests including Mrs. Wm.
Middleton F.W.I.O. board
member for subdivision 17,
and Mrs. Richard Fenton of
subdivision 16, also part of
the Grey Bruce area. Anoth-
er visitor who was welcomed
was a W.I. member from the
province of Quebec, Mrs.
Thorburn, who was visiting
in the vicinity.
The president, Mrs.
George Fisher, was in charge
of the meeting assisted by
Mrs. Gordon Wall, the
secretary treasurer. Rev. R.
C. Putman of the Pine River
United Church welcomed the
ladies. Mrs. Ray Stanley and
Mrs. Harold Bannerman of
the Silver Lake branch gave
the devotions. Following the
minutes, treasurer's report,
etc., Mrs. Middleton did the
ratification . of the District
Directors.
Miss June Alton of Luck -
now gave the report of the
Junior Institute of Ontario.

I.O. report told of our need to
support the Erland Lee
Home Fund to be held
between 1978-80, she spoke
of the changes in the courses

in place of the full day which
hasbeen the custom.
The W.I. exchange to
Staffordshire, England, will
be the last week of Septem-
ber and the first week of
October of this year and the
return exchange from Eng-
land to Ontario to be next
year. The next F.W.I.C. will
be held in Saskatoon.
She also mentioned that
the Hand Book is being
revised and a new additon
will be added. She also made
it clear that the Erland Lee
Home is the project of the
F.W.I.O. while the Adelaide
Hoodless Home is the project
of the F.W.I.C. Mrs. Francis
Gemmell, president
Grey Bruce Area brought
greetings and a few short
remarks as did Mrs. Richard
Fenton, chairman of the
Bruce County Rally.
The sing along breaks.
were enjoyed at both morn-
ing and afternoon meetings
led by Mrs. Harvey Houston.
Mrs. J. Needham and Mrs.
Garnet Farrier accompanied
in turn on the piano.
The entertainment in the
morning was provided by the
Ripley branch, two duets
were sung by Mrs. John A.
MacDonald and Mrs. James
Kirkpatrick, accompanied by
Mrs. Violet MacKenzie. In
the afternoon two humorous
readings were given by Mrs.
Donald McCosh.

of the Mrs. Wm. McInnes and Mrs.

Harold McCormick of the
Teeswater branch in memory
of six deceased members
from the District.
There was quite a good
display of quilts and afghans
for Participation Lodge and
entries for the competitions
to be judged of afghans,
paintings, and house log.
The judges were Mrs. Arnold
of Mildmay, Mrs. Maxwell
McKinnon of Kincardine and
Mrs. Kaufman of Elmwood.
The • judges were presented
with gifts for -their work.
Miss Barbara De Visscher,
Home Economist for Bruce.
County, gave an account of
her work with the Senior
Courses and 4-H. The pres-
ent 4-H course, "Outdoor
Living" is very popular with
five hundred young people
from 12 to 26 years taking the
course. This fall's course will
be "Essential Edibles". The
changes in courses and
achievement days are on a
year and a half trial basis.
Senior Training Schools will
be given by the Home
Economist rather than spec-
ial teachers coming from
Toronto. A needlepoint
course will be given on
November 1 and 2.
The Public Relations re-
port was given by Mrs.
Clarence Hedley who asked
the branches to read the
reports given them, and
asked them to support the
fund for the Erland Lee
Home. June 5 - 9 is W.I.
visiting week at the home.
She also congratulated Tiver-
ton branch who were quite
discouraged. but have made a
great comeback with a good
increase in membership.
Mrs. Robert Courtney
gave the Museum report and
its new .achievements, she
spoke on the new Curator
who is very capable and is
wining to speak to groups
about his work.
The Tartan report was
given by Mrs. Gladys Arnold
and Mrs. David Kennedy
first the report on the sale of
Tartan Ceramics, jewellery
and material. A motion was
made that the W.I. will
continue to support the
Bruce County Tartan. Mrs.
Kennedy completed .the re-
port on the Bruce County
Tartan Awards.
A resolution was present -
'ed to do with, revising the
Automobile insurance policy
to put a housewife on the
same coverage as other
women employees, it was
voted in favour of it proceed-
ing to the next level.

the kincardine branch.
Helen McKercher
named to Agric.
Hall of Fame
Helen McKercher, a form-
er McKillop Township resid-
ent and honorary president
of the Federated Women's
Institutes of Ontario, has
been named to the Canadian
Agricultural Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame, operat-
ed in conjunction with the
Royal Agricultural Winter
Fair, has honoured 102
Canadians for distinguished
service to agriculture in the
18 year history. of the
organization.
Miss . McKercher is only
the fourth woman to be
named to the Hall of Fame.
This year, the other two
nominees were the late
Robert McCain, who was a
farmer and director of Mc-
Cain' Food Limited, New
Brunswick and the late Dr.
Alfred Savage, a veterinarian
and professor at the Univer-
sity of Manitoba.
Miss McKercher's citation
read, "Miss McKercher is
best known for her leader-
ship among rural women and
the development of high
ideals and worthy standards
for successful home . and
family living."
The home economist, now
living in Stratford, retired in
1976 as director, home
economics branch, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food after 24 years of service
with the ministry.
Prior to working for
OMAF, Miss McKercher,
who holds both a B.Sc. and
M. Sc. degree, worked as
chief of consumer education
for the Canadian Department
of Fisheries.
Miss McKercher was nomt
inated for the recent honour
by the Federated Women's
Institute of Ontario.
Miss McKercher will be
formally honoured when her
portrait is hung in the Hall of
Fame on November 12 dur-
ing . the annual meeting and
banquet of the Hall of Fame
Association.
During her career, Miss
McKercher established nut-
rition, home management
and leadership training cour-
ses which touched the lives
of thousands of women and
4-H club girls across Canada.
She is the honorary pres-
ident of the Federated Wom-
en's Institute of Ontario, .a
life member of the Associat-
ed Countrywomen of the
World and in 1967, she was
awarded a Centennial Medal
for her efforts on behalf of
women and 4-H girls across
the country.
Another recent honour was
Miss' McKercher's appoint-
ment to the senate of the
University of Guelph.
