The Ripley District School Variety Concert featured. the Elementary Choir which performed such
favourites as Colorado Trall,, Gypsy River and Country Roads.
This Week in Ripley

Mr, and Mrs. Cecil Mooney of
Woodstock have been visiting
with his sister, Mrs. Adeline
(Ross) Martyn in Ripley. Cecil, a
native of Ripley will be remem-
bered as the leading athlete here
when he was attending the Ripley
Continuation School and then also
at the Wingham High School back
in the twenties. While attending
school, Cecil played hockey for
Ripley and then for Wingham.
From there he went to Woodstock
where he was a star player on the
Woodstick Red Devils hockey
team in the senior O.H.A. He is a
relative of Allan Stanley who
came along later and played for
the Toronto Maple Leafs and also
of Carl Stanley who' recently
played minor hockey for Ripley
and for neighbouring junior
teams.
Mr. Udo Petersoo, chairman of
the Estonian Central Council of
Canada, objects strongly to the
use of the skyline of the Estonian
capital of Tallin on one of the
new Russian Olympic coins,
according to the Toronto Daily
Star last Saturday. Udo will be
remembered by some in Ripley as
a good teacher in the Ripley
District High School back a few
years ago. At that time he
boarded at the home of Mrs.
Noreen ,MacCharles of Ripley,
now Mrs. Howard Robb of Am-
berley. He is a teacher in the
Etobicoke Collegiate through the
week and is the minister of a
church on Sunday in Toronto. On
the Etobicoke staff also from
Ripley staff was Mrs. Margaret
Willacks of Ripley and Seafbrth
and Mr. Allan Mason of Wiarton
former high school teachers with
this writer.
Neict Sunday, May 28, Dr.
Dianne Stanley, daughter of Russ
and Pat Stanley of the sixth
concession east in Huron Town-
ship will marry Dr. Geoffrey
Shulman, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Mortan Shulman of Toronto. Both
the bride and groom graduated
recently in Medicine at the
University of Toronto. The mar-
riage ceremony will be held in
Toronto. A descendant of the
pioneer Stanley family who set-
tled on the homestead at Purple
Grove, the bride has relatives
scattered across Canada and'
United States, since, for the
Stanleys it is a long way back to
their home Tipperary in Ireland.
Congratulations and best wishes
from the Ripley -Huron commun-
ity go to the happy couple.
The Ripley District Horticultur-
al Society held their annual
Spring Flower Show along with a
bake sale and tea on Tuesday
afternoon last week. It,was held in
the Ripley Huron Legion Hall
with a good attendance.
Sympathy is extended to Mrs.
Marjorie (Howard) Hodge of
Ripley on the passing of her
father. The funeral was held on
Tuesday afternoon of this week.
John Gamble of the Ripley
Huron Medical group reports that
an agreement has been reached
between Ripley and Huron and
Kin Huron Medical group to
share the cost of keeping the
Ripley Huron Medical Centre
open five days a week. Also there
will be a nurse receptionist at the
centre from ten in the morning to
five in the afternoon each day -
Monday to Friday. Doctors will be
do4 on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday. It is hoped that this
peration will start on June 19th.

Chief of the Ripley -Huron Fire
Department Ivan Cook of Ripley
(and his wife Betty attended the
Ontario Conference of fire chiefs
held in Ottawa. Over 500 from all
parts of Ontario attended the
banquet on Tuesday evening in
the Grand Ball Room in the
Skyline Hotel. • •
On Tuesday of last , week
Ronnie Rock, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Oraen Rock of Ripley, had a busy
and exciting evening. First he cut
the lawn at Gore. Park for village
foreman Don Peterbaugh then la-
ter he saw his crown cactus plant
flower, out in a large white bloom
for his brothers' (Robbie and
Richard) birthdays.
On Wednesday and Thursday
morning Bill Robertson of Tor-
onto visited in the Ripley area.
Earlier on hi's way back from the
Kentucky Derby Bill sent the
writer a coloured post card from
Ripley in New York state.
On Monday of last week Kenny
McLay of Halifax was visiting his
. native Ripley for the first time in
many years. He called at George
, McLean's store to renew acquain-
tances and then at the home of
Miss Christena Robertson. Kenny
was raised in the house where
Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Gamble
and family now live. Kenny has
been sailing on the Atlantic
Ocean in and out of Halifax
harbour for approximately the
past 40 years. There are so many
changes in Ripley that he hardly
recognized the place. His sister
Margaret, Mrs. Floyd Strathdee,
lives in Weston and brother D.
A., retired school principal is in
Toronto.
Last Thursday was the nicest
summer day so far this year.
Throughout this whole area the
sugar maple trees took on a
yellow look as they were out in
full bloom. And the evening was
just as nice. With the school
concert on young people could be
heard talking on the school lawn
and in the ball park.
Mrs. Irene (Doug) Liddle of
Clarks and . Ripley and Stewart
Needham of Ripley are both
patients in St. Joe's Hospital in
London. Best wishes are extend-
ed to them. Stewart was able to
return home on Friday afternoon.
Back home recently from St.
Joe's Hospital and able to be. out
is Mel Pollock of the 12th
concession west. -
Ripley drover . Leonard . Court-
ney of Amberley shipped for
Gordon Fry the calf which topped,..
the veal market at the Ontario
Livestock Yards in Toronto last
week according to the Saturday's
radio report.
Mrs. Harriet Moore of Ripley is
in Ottawa this week visiting with
her son. John.
Johnny Smith is busy cutting
grass at the area schools and also
at lake area.
Elliott and Grace Carruthers
recently returned to Ripley from
an enjoyable tour in Britain and
Ireland.
Mr. and Mrs. George MacLen-
nan and son Colin of Agincourt
spent the long Victoria Day
weekend in Ripley visiting with
her aunt Miss Florence MacDon-
ald and other relatives.
Allan and Glenda Gardner and
family of Vanastra visited during
the Victoria holiday weekend with
her sister, family and her father ,
Donnie and Carol Fludder, Tam-
my, and Jason and Glen Harris
in Ripley respectively.
Jack and Marion Lawrie of the
Tiverton area and Gord Harris of
Kincardine visited on Sunday
afternoon with their mother and
husband Jack and Evelyn John-
son in Ripley.
Ray Fuller is presently building
a new house on the lot just south
of the home of Bob and Marilyn
Johnston. Also recentlyRay
bought the house and lot from Bill
and Edith Henderson who moved
to Kitchener..
Ned Cote, who is now , in
Cormack, Saskatchewan, is visit-
ing with his wife Elaine and
family at their home. on William
