To All
Concerned Citizens
In The
Township Of Ashfield
There is a very important plebiscite coming up on May 29th regarding alcoholic
beverages in your community. All eligible voters, taxpayers, tenants, and
residents of the Township of Ashfield will be asked to vote "Yes" or."No" to the
following- options:
a) Are you in favour of the sale of spirits, beer and wine under a Dining Lounge .
Licence for consumption on licensed premises where food is available?
b) Are you in favour of the sale of spirits, beer and wine under a Lounge Licence
for consumption on licensed premises?
c) Are you in favour of the sale of spirits, beer and wine under an Entertainment
Lounge Licence for consumption on licensed premises?
A' "Yes" vote to the above questions will leave the door wide open to the free
flow and sale of alcoholic beverages within our township with all the perils
involved for young and old. We believe this to be a backward step at a time when
other communities are banning the sale of liquor at sporting events.
We ask your support in preventing the opening of liquor outlets in our township.
Vote "NO" on May 29th
Port Albert fishway
Makes life easy.....
BY JEFF,SEDDON
Anglers doubting the presence
of rainbow trout in Nine Mile
River at Port Albert need only
witness ministry of natural re-
sources employees tagging trout
at the Port Albert fishway to have
doubts .removed.
Since April 17, when the first
rainbow was caught in the,
fishway, over 425 trout have
ignored the tasty morsels offered
by fishermen at the river mouth
and moved through the fishway
on their way up river to spawn.
The trout run, small in compari-
son to other rivers emptying into
Lake Huron, is the first to be
helped up scream by the recently
constructed fishway.
Bob Walroth, contract biologist
at the fishway, said Thursday that
the small numbers of trout trying
to get up Nine Mile River to
spawn is not surprising. He said
the ' fish normally return to the
same river they were born in and
. spawning in Nine Mile has been
unsuccessful in the past. He said
many of the trout trapped in the
fishway are mature fish adding
support to the theory that the Port
Albert area has been unproduc-
tive in the past.
Walroth said a combination of
the Port Albert dam, bypassed
now by the fishway, and large
numbers of sport fishermen
dipping their lines in the confined
area between the dam and the
river mouth, are the two main
reasons for poor spawnings. He
said very few trout made it past
the dam because of its size adding
that the movement of fishermen
through the water below the dam
combined with the fish ' caught
during the spawning run reduced
the number of trout born recently
in Nine Mile River •fignificantly.
That fact should change with
the installation of the fishway
according to Walroth. He said the
success of the fishway will not be
known for another four or five
years but claims that the number
Of trout returning to Nine Mile
River in five years should
increase tenfold. He said he
expected about 500 fish to be
trapped in the fishway this year
and about 5,000 in five years.
Roy Bellinger, conservation
officer with the ministry, pointed
out that it was almost impossible
for trout to get past the Port
Albert dam to spawn. He said a
hole in the dam was the only route
the fish could take to get
upstream and conditions had to
be ideal for the trout to get
through it. He said those condi-
tions were sometimes never right
in past spawning seasons. He
said water levels and the flow rate
had to be just right fpr the -fish to
get through the hole in the dam
and when those conditions were
met they would only last a day or
'two at the most.
The fishway is basically a water
skirting kirting the five foot
dam that spans the river. The
water flows through a concrete
spillway and is dumped back into
the river below the dam reducing
the jump the fish must make from
five feet to one foot. Fish heading
upstream to spawn instinctively
follow the current of the river and
that instinct causes them to swim
to the bottom end of the fishway.
They jump over the barricade,
swim up the concrete spillway
and are trapped in a wire cage
about five feet long and three feet
wide.
Each hour Walroth and minis-
try employee Lloyd Tigert use a
chain hoist to raise the cage. The
