as severe, there is no shedding
required for the animals..
James . and his father, Jim,
manage their farm of 2,100 acres
with the assistance of two
shearers and a "rousa-about" to
sweep the shearing shed and
gather the wool. They shear each
sheep once a year but have four
different shearing times for a
portion of the flock at each time to
allow the two of them to run' the
farm without steady help.
James is a member of the
Victorian Young Farmers and
belongs to the local club, in
Beaufort which is -about 100 miles
west of Melbourne. He came to
Canada on April 16 after a three
week holiday in Europe.
He will tour south-western
Ontario for.three months, visiting
the counties of Peel, Lambton,
Huron, Middlesex and Oxford
and then ' he will tour eastern
Ontario in the Ottawa area, for
one month. After the exchange
has ended he will visit with his
sister, Alison, for two weeks in
Manhatten, New York, where she
is studying post -graduate music.
He also plans a four week bus trip
to Vancouver before leaving for
home.
He is sponsored on the
exchange by Murray Goulburn
Dairy Co-operative, Australia's
largest dairy co-operative with
5,000 members.
James plans to buy .out his
father and continue to farm the
home farm because wool is a good
security since the floor price is
guaranteed., He will buy the farm
over a._period of time to avoid gift
tax if his father were to give it to
him, or the necessity of selling
some of the property to buy the
complete farm outright when his
father dies,
He sees the objective of the
exchange program to be goodwill.
He wants to act as an ambassador
from Australia and from the
young farmer movement. The
purpose of' the exchange is to
learn about the country, people,
young farmers and farming
methods where he visits and them'
reporting to his community, the
Young Farmers' organization and
the agricultural industry in. Aus-
tralia about his experiences.
He has found the Junior
Farmers in Canada to be very
similar to the Young Farmers in
Australia except the Canadians
are more sports minded. Sports
are never a meeting activity in
Australia but rather a weekend
activity because the sports at
home are more organized with
various leagues. They have social
activities such as,-- dances to
replace the sports.
James finds Canadian farmers
much more organized than their
Australian counterparts and he
refers to the marketing boards
and price structures in the
Canadian industry.
He likes the people he has met
since visiting Canada. "Canadi-
ans are "goers" he says, they
work hard and they are very
"hospitable",".
"My Canadian hosts are taking
very good care of me," he laughs.
