The Block Parent is not tied to
the home by the program, adds
Jane. If he/she is going to be out,
the Block Parent removes the
Block Parent sign from the
window where it is displayed
until his return.
In an emergency involving a
child molester, the Block Parent
will call the police and parents
while offering protection to the
child. In emergencies inirolving
physical 'injury or illnesses, the
Block Parent will be advised to
contact the child's parents. If the
parents are unavailable, the Block
Parent will then contact -the
police, if warranted.
"Block Parent programs have
created a community awareness
that has been lost even in smaller
communities," says Barb. Block

The people of Lucknow and the
surrounding district responded to
the Cancer Campaign conducted
during the month of April with
$2,782.70 being raised. The
motto for the campaign this year
was "Cancer Can Be Beaten!
What's It Worth to You?". Jane
Treleaven, campaign chairman,
said that she feels it must be
worth a great deal to the people of
this area because "they really did
open their pocketbooks to help in
the fight against this dreaded
disease."

St. Helen's
Cemetery
A meeting of West Wawanosh
ratepayers was held at the St.
Helens Community Hall on May
17, chaired by Donald Thompson,
appointed a committee to restore
the St. Helens Cemetery.
Mrs. Harold Gaunt, Mrs.
Helen Todd, and Charles McQuil-
lin were appointed to represent
the St. Helens community to plan
and restore the Cemetery to a
respectable place of rest with
assistance at he local level.
The reeve, councillors and
clerk -treasurer attended the
meeting.

PLAQUE UNVEILING - The Point Clark lighthouse is designated a historic site. To commemorate the
occasion a plaque was dedicated on May 16. Mrs. Jack MacDonald of Lucknow, daughter of Jack
Campbell [Ret. 19621, the last lighthouse keeper, unveiled the plaque. Built in 1859 by the Department of
Public Works, this handsome 87. foot structure is one of six "Irmperlal Towers" on these shores. The
circular limestone tower has wails five feet thick at the base, tapering. to two feet at the top. The
polygonal cast iron lantern originally housed a dioptric light of the 2nd Order warning mariners of a
dangerousScarcely shoal from twom miles kff shore; the light Ili now one of lesser magnitude nerving present needs.
