What kind of a guarantee is it when a TV set
supposedly fixed and guaranteed for 90 days breaks
down within a month and the firm says there is a
Charge even to come and look at it?
This is what happened to my Mother in Toronto.
This TV repair firm .claims that their guarantee
is solid but that it DOES NOT include service calls
and they maintain that the problem now with your
mother's set is a completely "new fault" so they
wanted the full payment.
Anyhow after much haggling, they have agreed
to only bill your mother for new parts, since they
don't want, ' what they say, is, "unnecessary
static", as they claim they .are a dependable firm
that has been established since 1960.
Lanesville Store
North Ashfield supports
country general store
Bernice Kemp who manages
Kemp's` General Store at Lanes-
ville would hate to see the big
chain stores "swallow up" the
country general store.
"The country store is the
backbone of, the country really,
but, it's up to the people in the
community to support their local
general store."
Bernice and her husband,
Gord, bought the store in May,
1976.
The people of North Ashfield
are good says Bernice. They
support the store and she has
regular customers who do all their
grocery shopping at the store
even' though big supermarket,
chains have stores in Goderich
and Kincardine.
"For the pennies they save on
the lower priced items in Goder-
ich or Kincardine, - gas is so
expensive, it's not. saving," says
Bernice. "Unless you are going
into town for other reasons and do
your shopping for groceries while
you're there, it's not saving
anything."
She notices competition from
the chain stores at different times
of the year. In summer, for
example, the women don't have
the time to go in co Goderich to
shop because they are helping in
the field, doing the chores while
the men work the fields and
preparing big meals to feed extra
help. They can pop over to the
store and pick up what they need
without taking most of the day.
The people in the community
are friendly says Bernice and they
shop at the store. Some do all
their shopping there and others
do regular through the week
shopping.
The thing most people, who
visit the store for the first time,
notice is that it is new. The
original store burned in 1972 and
a new modern one -storey building
with living quarters replaced the
old two-storey brick building.
Bernice has some people come
out to the store from Lucknow
because she stocks Dutch cheeses
and cookies, and fresh sliced
meats. She will order a special
amount of meat for stags and
wedding receptions.
She tries to stock a little bit of
everything. She has work clothing
and a hardware section for the
farmers and a small selection of
shower gifts and toys and
necessary drug items such as
aspirin.
Bernice and her husband,
Gord, were raised in the Toronto
area and they both worked at
Avro Aircraft until it closed down.
Gord took a position with
Lockheed Aircraft and they lived
in Georgia for 13 years. When
they came back from Georgia,
they moved to a farm near
Lanesville where they farmed for
two years and then bought the
store in 1976.
Gordon works at Dominion
Roads in Goderich and Bernice
manages the store through the
day. They close Tuesday, Sunday
morning and evening, but are
open 8.30 to 9.30 except Sundays
when they open for the afternoon.
Gord and Bernice talked about
owning a store when they were
first married so • it has been a
consideration for some time.
Bernice enjoys working with
people and meeting the public so
the store is a natural. 1 ...

Bernice acrd Gord Kemp purchased the general store in Lanesville two years ago and have found that the

stores "swallowed up" by the supermarket chains because the country store has been a' part of the
backbone of this country. The farmers in the community depend on the store especially during buy times
of the year litre the seeding and harvest seasons.
