Ian Finlayson of the Lucknow
Energy Conservation Centre has
returned from a week long
seminar on solar energy, solar
heating, wind and water power
and insulation at the Heathcote
School of Living in Pennsylvania.
The seminar, during the last
week of March, was attended by
40 people interested in experi-
menting with alternate energy
sources. The Heathcote school
sponsors the seminars to educate
people and allow them to work on
building models and alternative
energy projects.
Finlayson will give a slide
presentation about the seminar at
the Lucknow Centre on Friday,
May 5 -at 7.30p.m.
The Heathcote School of Living
located half way between York,
Pepnsylvania and Baltimore,
Maryland, is a community of ten
people living on 50 acres of land.
The main building is a 200 year
old mill which the community has
renovated and all the buildings
have wood heaters, most of which°
are homemade.

One of the houses in the
community was built by the
community member,. herself. Her
greenhouse opens into the living
area allowing the greenhouse to
be a heat source for the living
quarters. She uses a wood stove
as a backup source of heat..
The community belongs to a
food co-op where they buy
vegetables in bulk to supplement
what they grow.
Those attending the seminar
shared kitchen duties, light
housekeeping and meal prepara-
tion. The diet was vegetarian.
On the weekend of the seminar,
lectures were given on solar
energy arid heating, wind and
water power and insulation. The
group toured a nearby farm
where the electric power to the
barn and house is supplied by a
water powered 'generator.
Through the week, the group
worked on several energy projects
and models. They built a solar
wail where the collector is located
inside the wall; the air passes into
the bottom of the collector and
through the collector where it is
heated.
The heated air then, flows
through a vent to the apartment
to heat the living area. A wood
stove would be used as a back up
to this system.
The seminar group built a wood
stove from two oil drums,at a total
cost of $5.
They started to build a solar
heated outdoor shower system
and the completed a food dryer
for drying fruits and vegetables
for winter storage.
Finlayson said that he learned
more about solar heating during
the seminar and he understands it
better. He is now more confident
about talking with people about
solar heating.
