Recommends Grains Act extended
The National Farmers Union, at
a hearing of the Canada Grains
Commission held in London on
April 11, recommended that the
appropriate -section of the Canada
Grain Act be proclaimed to
extend all of the provisions of the
Canada Grain Act to all of
Canada.
•
Blake Sanford, Region 3 Co-or-
dinator for the NFU told the
hearing today that extension of
the Canada Grain Act particularly
in grading and licensing of
elevators is most urgent for
producers in the province of
Ontario. Grain producers in
Ontario now operate under a
hodge-podge of regulations. Ele-
vators are licensed under the
Ontario Grain Elevator Storage
Act and where a marketing board
for a particular commodity exists,
also under the Farm Products
Marketing Act.
Gradestandards appeal provi-
sions of the Canadal Grain Act are
only available where a marketing
board is able to reach an
agreement with the elevator for a
particular commodity. A corn
producer may send a sample of
his products to the Canada Grain
Commission for grading but the
acceptance of the results by the
elevator is voluntary.
Mr. Sanford added that the
extension of the provisions of the
Canada Grain Act to all of Canada

Farmers turn to soybeans
BY ASHLEY GEDDES
Farmers in Huron County are
moving toward soybean produc-
tion as an alternative to other less
profitable and sometimes trouble-
some cash crops'.
In 1976 there was 900 acres of
soybeans planted in the county;
last year more than 2,000 and this
year Mike Miller, Agricultural
Representative for Huron, said he
expects acreage to increase to
between three and four. thousand.
The reason for the increase,
said Miller, is that comapred to
other grain crops the profit
decrease in the last two years is
less with soybeans. A farmer can
farmer must get $5.50.
Many of the farmers south of
Clinton are trying 10 -acre test

of soybeans to make it an
attractive crop.
Even though the price of a
bushel of soybeans has also gone
