News
On Tuesday, March 28 the
executive of the Wingham Voice
for Life group met at the home of
Adrian Keet, president.
Education chairwoman, Mrs.
' Sally Campeau, reported on a
forthcoming speaking engage-
ment with a sociology class at the
Kincardine High School, the date
pending on the availability of a
doctor, lawyer:, sand clergyman to
form a panel to answer students'
questions.
Mrs. Campeau stated that the
law governing abortion is contain-
ed in the Criminal Code of
Canada and falls under Federal
jurisdiction. It is the responsibil-
ity of each province to see that the
Federal statues are enforc and _
that there is no abuse of appr ed
procedures. She said that she
wrote a letter to Hon. Dennis
Timbrell, Minister of Health in
Ontario, regarding this. The
highlights of her letter were as
follows: "The delicate issue of the
Federal Abortion Law poses a real
problem. We believe that it is a
bad (Le. immoral) law, counten-
ancing and abetting the deliber-
ate destruction of innocent human
life. However, we know that the
law exists and that its application
has led to many abuses. We do
not defend the law but urge our
provincial legislators to reduce its
effect by pleading for the strictest
interpretation of the law and for
recburse to other alternatives for
treating on unwanted ,pregnan-
cy'
"We recommend the following
alternatives: 1) Counselling serv-
ices should be created to assist
pregnant women to find construc-
tive help. 2) The government
should publicize the advances
that have been made in the
techniques of "natural" fertility
control. 3) Schools should be
encouraged to • provide more
extensive education in pre -natal
human life. 4) There should be
increased funding for research on
the treatment of pre -natal as well
as post -natal congenital defeets.
5) Family and mother's allowance
should commence during preg-
nancy rather than after birth. 6)
Special programs should be
introduced to help unwed moth-
ers and to eliminate the social
stigma often attached to unwed
motherhood, 7) There should be
free maternal diet supplements of
milk, proteins and vitamins to
ensure good pre -natal develop-
ment of the infant. All babies
should be guaranteed free access
to the nutrition required to
achieve their capacity for health,
intelligence, and vitality. 9) There
should be guaranteed income
maintenance for women during
the critical years of -bearing and
raising babies. 10) The housing
crisis should receive urgent
attention. Massively increased
government support is needed for
low-income housing".
Mr. Timbrell responded by
saying that the special committee
which received the Badgley
Report for his Ministry found the
subjects to be of sufficient
complexity to warrant further
examination, and he has taken
"steps to see that this is done.
Obviously, thke_ points that the
Wingham group have raised will
be very important to the ensuing
digcussions, he 'added.
Mrs. Campeau has_ also written
a letter to the Hon. 3. Gilles
Lamontagne with regards . to
having a stamp printed commem-
orating the "International Year of
the Child".
Adrian Keet is !resigning as
president of the group. Wingham
Pro-Life.is deeply indebted to him
for his strong leadership in the
past and the many long hours and
hard work that he has devoted to
,such a worthy cause.
