The opening of school would be one week earlier than usual, that is ' the last week of August rather than the first week of September. The schools would close from December 22 to the end of January and all Statutory Holi- days would remain the same. School would end on June 30 as usual and there would be an eight week summer vacation.• During the presentation on the proposal, the trustees examined figures that indicated energy costs for the Board had risen from $52,628 annually „ in 1973 to $134,500 annually in, 1978, an HIp your Heart... Help your Heart fund increase of $81,872 or 156 per cent. Most shocking, and the subject of considerable discussion were' the figures • indicating the instructional time lost during January 1978 due to weather conditions and illness. Statistics indicated the schools were disrupted 49 times resulting in 11,204 student days lost and 310 teacher days lost due to weather conditions and illness. The trustees noted, that January of 1978 was a mild year for the Bruce -Grey area compared to January 1977 whenthere were 107 school disruptions. In the Province of Ontario, a student is entitled to 185 Instruc- Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, April 12, 1978—Page n tionl Days but the effect of January reduces this to approxi- mately 181 days which does not include days lost due to illness during other months. Many trustees felt that this was an area of major concern which could be overcome to some degree if the school year were changed. It is .the intention of the Board to provide opportunities for public reaction in several ways. General information on the proposal will be sent to all parents followed by a meeting in each community. After the meetings, a survey will be distributed to each home for parents to complete. The infdrma- tion gathered will be consolidated into ,a report for the Board. 150 Prizes MUST BE WON IN THE BIG "Spot the Merchants" Contest SEE NEXT WEEK'S LUCKNOW SENTINEL 0 0 121 saw°re Si "Well Worth- Looking For" Prices Effecitve Until APRIL 22 We Reserve the Right to Limit Quantities LY vaisselle • for dishes ® Registered trademark of Drug Trading Company Ltd.
