Dear Comrades, Thank you so much for the 1978 and 79 membership. I certainly do appreciate it. Harold would you send the membership card to the above address. Living in...the Caribbean is not without complications. However everyday the weather is beautiful, in the 70's at night and 85 or so during the day. I go. to work at 7 and generally quit about three or so. We've a 5 minute walk from the beach - black sand. No snow, but then one can't have everything. We go swimming most after- noons. Some days it is hot, from noon till 3 p.m. is the worst on a bad day. It gets light about6 a.m.- and pitch black shortly after 6 p.m. A very short period of twilight, about 10 minutes. St. Vincent is a very beautiful island. It is mountainous - very rugged ones, with a wealth of multi -coloured vegetation grow- ing up to the peaks. There are bananas, cocoanuts,• mangoes, paw -paws and all sorts of odd foods. Some are good; others it Makes time to cultivate a taste for them. There are orange,, grape . fruit and tangerines of course. We live six miles from Kings- town. The Ministry of Agriculture is there. It is a dirty busy little city with a deep water harbour. Most of the homes are perched on the hillsides. Many on stilts and seems like they are, about to slide into the harbour. On a Saturday morning the noise, heat and crowds in the market is really something to experience. 1 believe that this is considered one of the very poor islands of the third world. With development, a few seem to be getting richer but so many people remain so very CONTINUED ON PAGE 9 Former area farmer buys Button farms Art And Diane Dickson of Olds, Alberta and formerly of Port Albert, have bought the farms of Russell and Freda Button and Mrs. Lorna Button. We have been a Consumer Society behaving as if the "cornucopia of resources and energy would never be em- pty," said McQuail at the ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Reeve George Joynt, Lucknow. As we shift to a Conserver Society, said McQuail, we will learn to act so that the cornucopia need never run empty. There is a major difference - in approach. As goals are re- examined, approaches which seemed appropriate when energy was "cheap . and unlimited" will be discovered to be no longer viable. New ways -of meeting society's needs which use less. energy and are easier on the environment will be developed. Many of these changes will cost nothing pointed out McQuail. Some will involve a recycling approach to use what were once considered wastes as resources. Society will learn to do more with less and it will be reflected in fuel bills, hydro bills and in the sense of security as society becomes less dependent on distant energy supply systems. "Our society faces an exciting time as it shifts to a sustainablie energy economy," said McQuail, "We hope the Energy Con- servation Centre can help make that shift easier for the people of Huron and Bruce Counties to benefit now." Reeve George Joynt, Lucknow, right cuts the ribbon to officially open the Lucknow Conservation Centre last Wednesday. He is assisted by the centre's co-ordinator, Tony McQuail, RR1 Lucknow. The purpose of the centre which is located on Campbell Street in the storefront next to the Sentinel office, is to make information on energy conservation and renewable energy easily available to the public and to serve as a focal point for people who are interested in energy.
