The Garvey Public Speaking
competitions were held in St.
Joseph's School at Kingsbridge
on Friday afternoon, February .10,
beginning at 1 p.m. Top students
from Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8
competed.
In Grade 5 Kenny VanOsch,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill
VanOsch, was first prize winner,
speaking on Football. Christine
Stapleton, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Neil Stapleton. placed sec-
ond, speaking on Niagara Falls.
Billy Card, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Card, placed third, speak-
ing on "Milking Cows". Others
taking part in Grade 5 were Vickie
Doherty, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Stan Doherty, speaking on
Daulphins, and Tommy Gilmore,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Gilmore,
telling of his achievements in
"Baton Twirling".
In Grade 6 was John Lalonde,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Jean
Lalonde, was first place winner,
speaking on "Ants". Betty Jane
Foran placed second, speaking on
"T.V. Commercials" and third
place went to Stephen Hickey
speaking on "Phobias". Others
taking part were Shawn Doherty
speaking on "Woes of the Sea".
First and second place winners in
.the Grades 5 and 6 level were
John Lalonde, first, and Kenny
VanOsch,. second.
In ' Grade 7 Heather Ann
Stapleton, daughter of Mr. and -
Mrs., Neil Stapleton, . took top
honours, speaking on. "Petticoat
Acres". Second place was won
by Brent VanOsch, son of Mr. and
Mrs.. Antone VanOsch, speaking
on "Dairy Farming". Third place
went to Teresa VanRooy, daught-
er of Mr. and Mrs. John VanRooy
who spoke about' the 1971
Snowstorm. Other speakers ` in
Grade 7 were Denise Connelly,
daughter of Mr. and .Mrs. Dennis
Connelly, speaking on. "Braille, A
Gift of Sight" and Linda Sinnett,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James
Sinnett, who spoke about the ship.
"Belle River".
Grade 8 speakers were all girls..
First prize - was won , by Rose
Marie O'Keefe, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph O'Keefe, speak-
ing'on "The. C.B.". Second prize
went to Jackie Dalton, daughter
of Mrs. Mark Dalton, speaking on
'Dreams", and third place was
won by Annie VanDiepan, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Arie
VanDiepan who speke on "How

audience on a tour of the boat,
"The Paul H. Townsend". Kath-
' leen Foran spoke on "The Value
of Time". First and second place
winners in the Grades 7 and 8
level were, first, Heather Ann
Stapleton and second, Rose Marie
O'Keefe.
Judges • were Paul Carroll,
principal of the Seaforth Public
School, and Vern Batte, principal
of St. Joseph's ` Roman ' Catholic
School, Port Elgin. They were
presented with an envelope gift
by the chairman, Mr. David
Zyluk, principal of St. Joseph's at
Kingsbridge. Special' guests in-
troduced by the chairman were,

ident of the Huron Perth 'County
Roman `Catholic Separate School

presentation.
Gary Courtney, son of Mr. and
Mrs, Joseph Courtney and Frank
VanDiepenbeek, son of Mr. and
Mrs, Frank VanDiepenbeek, flew
from Toronto International .Air-
port on Saturday morning, Febru-
ary 11 for aFthree week holiday in
Dallas, Texas, New Mexico,
Acapulco, and Las Vegas.
Diane VanRooy, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John VanRooy arid
Bridget. Dalton, daughter of Mrs.
Mark Dalton were among the 25
exchange students of the Goder-
ich District Collegiate Institute to
go by bus to Montreal on Friday,
February 10. The students from •
Montreal are expected' to visit
Goderich the end of April.
Joe VanRooy, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John VanRooy and Bernard
Boyle of St. Augustine, left on
Friday, February 10 for a two

Plans are being made for a
special meeting on "Pornography
in the High Schools", to be held
in St. Joseph's Parish Hall at
Kingsbridge on Wednesday, Feb-
ruary 15 at 8 p.m. The guest
speaker will be Mr. Lloyd Barth of
R. R. 3, Blyth. Everyone is
welcome.
On Friday evenings in Lent
there will be a Holy Hour of
Reparation beginning at 8 p.m.
with rosary, stations of the Cross
and Holy Mass. After this hour on
Friday, February 17 there will be
a euchre party in the Parish
Hall, sponsored by the Kings-
bridge Catholic Women's Le-
ague. Prizes an61 lunch. Admis-
sion is only 75c.
Gary Courtney was a winner in
the Valentine Draw held in Blyth
on Friday, February 10.
