Ontaric.. may lose
younger farmers
Ontario maty lose its younger
generation of farmers, Bill Ben-
son, second vice president of the
Ontario Federation of Agricul-
ture, told the Bradford Lions Club
on Monday.
"Ontario agriculture • is in
serious trouble," said Mr. Ben-
son, a 32 -year-old, Wellington
County beef farmer. "It's difficult
enough for someone who is
established. For the younger
farmer, or someone wild wants to
get started, it's almost impos-
sible."
Mr. Benson explained that,
while farm gate prices increased
by 73 percent between 1969 and
1976, the cost of land and
buildings went up to 178 percent.
"To get into farming today, you
need an investment of between
$200,000. and $400,000. Farm
incomes have fallen for three
years in a row.. If you don't own
your farm,. you will be lucky to
make the interest payments."
Mr. Benson pointed out that
Canadians have one of the lowest
cost sources of food in the world.
The percentage of disposable
income that Canadians spend for
food at home has dropped from 20
percent in 1947 to 13.6 percent in
1976.
Mr. Benson concluded that, "If
Canadians want •to keep an
inexpensive source of food, they
had better make sure we have
future generations . of farmers toy
provide it. 7,
