by Huron farmers
BY HELEN CONNELL
The national food conference
slated in Ottawa February 22 has
been described as "ludicrous"
and a ."witch hunt" in a brief
released Saturday by the •Huron
County Federation of Agriculture,
The brief was one of a -series.
presented to two area MPs, Jack
Riddell (L—Huron-Middlesex)
and Murray Gaunt (L--Huron-
Brtice). MP Bob McKinley (PC ---
Huron Middlesex)) was ,unable to
attend the meeting.
The Huron brief termed the
conference a "witeh hunt" aimed
at trying to pin the blame for
higher food costs on processors;
supermarkets or farmers.
"Pre -conference publicity
seems to. be placing the emphasis
on controlling prices at the farm.
gate in order to keep food costs
down. This naturally gives rise to
farmers' fears that a national food
policy, is simply .a continuation of
Canada's cheap food policy," the
brief said.

The brief said it gives farmers
"a laugh" to hear the govern-
ment talk about increasing prod-
uctivity on the farm.
It continued: ,"In 1931 in
Canada, one farmer fed himself
and 10 other people. In 1951, one
farmer fed himself and 16 other
people. In 1976, one farmer fed
himself and 53 other people. , If
every other industry in Canada
had this good a track record,
there would be no inflation in
Canada today because we could
boast of a national productivity
which would be the envy of the.
rest of the world."
The brief also said it is
"ludicrous" to think a single
national food policy will cover the
complexities of farming, food
processing, transportation, mark-
eting and retailing.
"We expect the conference will
be a publicity gimmick for
vote -hunting politicians."
The brief said consumers spend
an average of 14 per cent of their'
take-home pay on food and they
will never be satisfied they are
getting a reasonable price on
food.
The brief also expressed con-
cerns the two-day food conference
would be used' to attack market-
ing boards. . :
. t said the marketing board is
the farmer's only means of
controlling his production costs.
The brief said .suggestions by
the ' Consumers' Association of
Canada (CAC) that consumers be
represented on marketing boards
are not reasonable.
"After all, we don't see any
CAC members being appointed to
the boards of General Motors or
Imperial Oil."
Bev Brown, an executive mem-
ber of the Huron Federation of
Agriculture and the author of the
brief, said Sunday farmers will
make up only 40 of the 400
delegates attending the conven-
tion.
She said the ratio of farmer to
non -farmer to discuss the busi-
ness of farming is "unrealistic"
and "it's definitely politicking."
The Huron Federation annouh-
ced Tuesday that they plan to
charter a bus on February 22 with
the plan of returning the next day
to attend a Counter Meeting to be
held in Ottawa on the same day as
the federal conference.
The ,OFA has invited Prime.
Minister Trudeau to attend their
meeting which is to clarify the
farmer's need with respect to the
present,. and future profitable
survival of farming in Canada to
the Canadian people.
The OFA finds that only in this
way can they bring the serious-
ness of the situation to the
attention of the government and
the public,

municipality in lieu of taxes on
farm land.
The Huron Federation is op-
posed to assessment based on
market value for farm land and
farm buildings because in an
urban shadow area the taxes on
farm land and buildings would go
right out . of sight: "Usually a
higher assessment means a lower
mill' rate," said Merle Gunby,
first vice-president of the Huron
Federation, "but in an urban
shadow area there would be too
few farms to bring down the mill
rate and the assessment would be
sky high because of the artificially
high, value of real estate in such
an area compared to the value in a
rural area."
