The construction of the Lucknow District_ Community Centre is
progressing at Caledonian Park where the steel gliders have risen
and the form of a building is recognizable. The fund raising
campaign' went into high gear this week with the announcement of
the $52,000 lottery which will see ,a weekly. draw for a..$1,000 for a
year beginning on March lst. The fund raising committee hopes
that the money raised from the lottery will cover most oldie cost of
• the new community centre.

There will be a spring rum-
mage sale on April 21st and the.
fall one on October 20th: Tag day
will be held from May 1st to the
1 1th in Wingham and surround-
ing .towns. The general meetings
for 1978, will be held on April
17th, June. 26th, September 13th
and November 27th.
A lovely home made quilt will
be, on display in . Wingham,
Teeswater, and Lucknow in the
near future and tickets will be
sold with draw to be made at our
June meeting.
.. The Blood Donor Clinic will be
held on 'May- 2nd at the F. E.
Madill Secondary ,School, the
Auxiliary willbe responsible for,
the volunteer help with Mrs. John
Gnay. convener.
'A morning coffee .break from
9.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and an
afternoon tea from 2.30 p.m. to 4
p.m. will be.; held. at the home of
Mr:n-and Mrs.. Leonard Phillips on
May 29th. The Auxiliary hope for
a good turn out.
As our hospital is known as the,
Wingham and District Hospital
we would like to see more
Auxiliary members from the help, join us, there is a job for us
surrounding district. If you can ' all......
Action 'against' smoking
The .cigarette tragedy has
reached epidemic proportions and
is now the number one prevent-
able public health problem in this
country, etcording to H. Cowan of
the Bruce, Dufferin, Grey Lung,
Association.. In a survey, a-
whopping majority said smoking
is enough of a health hazard for
something to be done,. Ninety
percent of nonsmokers .wanted
action of some kind. So did- 72
percent of smokers themselves:
Some action has begun. There
are proposals before government
agencies to disallow ads th .t
associate smoking with health
and wholesome` outdoor activity.
There are'petitions to prohibitthe
use of people in cigarette ads - an
action that- would de -glamorize

United States the federal Trade
Commission in fact has already
launched an intensive investiga-
ion of the ad practices of the
, igarette industry, an industry
which spends more than $390
million every year to, promote
their lethal product. The FTC has
demanded a copy of every ad
prepared during the past decade.
Although the presence . of
cancer-causing and disease -inflic-
ting . substances in cigarette
smoke has been demonstrated
conclusively, no attempt has yet
been made toregulate these
substances.

Mr. and. Mts. Farish Moffat
of Wingham, entertained' on
Saturday evening in honour of her
father, Mr. Alec MacKenzie of
Lucknow; who was celebrating his
93rd birthday, Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Moffat, Julie Ann, Ken-
dra and Alexander of Oakville
were present and . spent the
weekend.
Mr. and. Mrs. John Wraith,
Lucknow visited with Mr. and •
Mrs. John Errington, Dungannon
on Sunday.
Mrs. Jim - McNaughton, Luck -
now, has returned_ home after
spending ten days in Wingham
Hospital following surgery. ,
Jack Henderson, .Lucknow, an
employee of C. & M. Transport,
Lucknow was., taken to Kincardine
Hospital on .Monday of -last week
after being attacked by a cattle
beast. He was released the same
day. The accident happened while
he was loading, cattle at the farm
of Lester Farrell, R. R. 2, Ripley. .
Mrs. Norma McDonagh, Luck -
now, has flown from Florida to
her son Chuck's home, in Tucson,
Arizona, where she will spend a ,
couple of weeks;" .
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Robb,
Amberley are pleased to an-
nounce the engagement of her
daughter, Sandra MacCharles, to,
John Hamilton, Calgary, son. of
Mrs. Doreen Hamilton and, the
late Mr. Hamilton, ' Ottawa. The
