County Farm Repory SOYBEANS What about Soybeans for Bruce County? With present varieties it looks like they will produce satisfactory yields within ten miles of Lake Huron and north to Southampton. I can only see them as a cash crop. They have to be -cooked for swine which is almost impossible and is very- energy -consuming in an on-farm situation. Alfalfa will produce protein cheaper than Soybeans for cattle. We' had demonstration plots at Port Elgin and Paisley and they grew satisfactorily in 1077. How- ever, if there had been a killing frost before September 15, the yield would have been very low as at least one third of the growth occurred after that date. If you still want to grow soybeans, the varieties in order of maturity are - . Maple Arrow, Beechwood and Evans. They should be planted in 7 or 14" rows. Weed control is expensive and too involved to discuss in a news release but it is covered in detail in Publication #75. They can be combined direct, The land should be stone free because the lower pods are set right -near the, bottom of the stalk. The header should have a flexible cutter, bar for best ' results. The pride of soybeans is tied to the world supply of edible oil which causes wide price variations. The present price is $5.80 per bushel, The • maximum yield would be 45 bushels and 30 would be ., a reasonable yield to expect. M. R. BOLTON, Ag. Rep. WEED CONTROL COURSE You can still attend the weed course in the Bruce 'township Hall, Underwood on Friday, February 3; or at the' Ontario Ministry of Agriculture'and Food Board Room, Walkerton, on Monday, February 6. The Course starts at 1.00 p.m: each day andis free. M. R. BOLTON, Ag. Rep: 4-1I .CQNSERVATIQN AND VETERINARIAN CLUBS Two new types of 441 clubs will be attempted in various parts of Bruce County in 1978. Bruce 4-H:'-Conservation club will operate on a county basis. with meeting topics directly relating to agriculture. Topics`for discussion will include: - How cropping practices contri- bute to soil erosion - Water pollution through differ- ent 'manure handling systems - Economics of farm woodlot management ' - Air and noise pollution through agriculture - Energy conservation by means of windbreaks This club will base its meetings in Walkerton or Hanover, starting in late February. Three other communities in the County have indicated their willingness to start 4-R Veterinar- ian clubs. In Walkerton -Hanover,. Dr. Dennis Adams; in Wingham, Dr. Alex Strong; in Kincardine, Dr. Roger. Thomson, Dr. Terry Freed. 4-H , Vet club meetings are usually very topical, and .cover subjects of immediate . interest to . the farming community. A project on Animal Health is a require-- . ment of this club. These clubs will also organize in late February. ,Both the Conservation Club and the Vet Clubs are of a senior. nature (14 - 20 years old). If you have an interest.and want to know more about these clubs, 1 can be contacted at the O.M.A.F. Office in Walkerton. RANDY WILLICK, Extension Assistant. DON'T BE SHY COME JOIN US! *1t ,( fid. AUSTIN For the past number of weeks the activities of the new U.S: farm organization calling itself Ameri- can Agriculture (A.A.) has attrac- ted nationwide attention, Most dramatic among its actions has been the picketing action of U.S. border crossing with a view toward preventing . the importa- tion of live Canadian cattle. A number of NFU members. have expressed interest in the A.A. movement and have inquir- ed what the NFU position is on the actions. Part of the difficulty in coming to grips in understanding the situation has been the highly decentralized nature of the ac- tions with no clear figurehead as .a spokesman or leader. At their Board of Directors meeting on January 7 and 8, NFU spokesman said it was not clear to the board just how they might provide meaningful support to the M1 A.A. or just what are their policy objectives. Conflicting reports have been received. The N.F.U. Board also observ- ed that there appears to be no clear interest onthe part of the American Agriculture movement to bring about any changes in the present free marketing system in the U.S. This is an important part of the problem. w. The N.F.U. Board passed 'a motion that, while they are sympathetic to the plight of the U.S. farmers involved in the A.A. protest movement, it cannot endorse their proposals for a solution because their proposals do not come to grips with the fundamental problems of the market economy. The National Executive of the NFU will seek an early meeting with representatives of the. A.A. movement with a view to gaining a clearer insight of the situation. CLASSIFIED ADS
