are not toys
"Snowmobiles are not toys,"
says R. W. Wilson, Community
Services Officer for the Ontario
Provincial Police. "Being a snow-
mobile patrol " ° officer for five
years, I have seen many, accidents
because of ignorance and foolish-
ness." .
Snowmobiles are an exciting
and effective mode of transporta-,
tion when there is sufficient snow
and to familiarize snowmobilers
with 'the laws most commonly
used and abused a concise
guideline follows:
REGISTRATION:
A motorized snow vehicle
cannot be operated anywhere, not
even on your own property unless
it is registered and has the
registeration number placed pro-
perly on both sides of the cowling.
There ., is- no fee for this
registration. All you have to do is
go to, the M.T.0 'licencing office
and register. They will issue you
with a number and you either
paintit.on or buy the numbers to
stick on. These numbers must be
no less than 2" high, no more
than 3" high, 1/4" to 1/2" wide
and the colour must contrast with
the back -ground colour.
PERMIT
If you wish to operate your
motorized snow vehicle on any
pr'operty'other than your own, you
must obtain a, permit. The fee is
$10.00 and can be obtained -at the
nearest licence issuing office of
the M.T.C.
Licence plates are no longer.
issued. Now you receive two
validation permits Wand two back-
ground patches to be placed on
the cowling both sides. •
INSURANCE: ,
Insurance is required when, you
operate .your snow vehicleon a
highway (any public road), or
public trail (trail maintained in
whole or in part by public funds).
The driver of a motorized show
vehicle, even if not the owner, is
responsible to produce evidence
that the Motorized Snow Vehicle
is insured when requested by a
Police Officer or Conservation
Officer.
HELMETS:
A helmet must be worn by
every person driving or riding on
a motorized snow vehicle or on a
cutter, toboggan, sled sitnilar
conveyance towed by a snow
vehicle on a serviced roadway or
public trail. A serviced • roadway,
means travelled portion of a
highway and the shoulder. The
helmet .must be approved by the
Highway Traffic Act. •
TOWING: •
Only a rigid tow `bar 'must be
used when a motorized snow
vehicle is towing a cutter,
toboggan etc. Towing is prohibit-
ed on a serviced roadway except
to' cross at 90 degrees.
MUFFLERS:
Motorized snow vehicles must
be equipped with a muffler in
good working order. Cut outs,
expansion chambers, straight
exhaust, gutted or hollywood
muffler, bypass or similar devices
are not allowed except when
driving in a racing area sanction-
ed by the council • of the
Municipality.
ACCIDENT REPORTING:
Yoil mut report to the Police
immediately any collision on or
off the highway that results in
injury to any person or damage, to
property apparently over $100.00.
This rneans anywhere and includ-
es a collision which only your own
machine is 'involved'
