harbor several weeks, went the story
as told by Dr. Martin, and the cap-

fain finally sent In a challenge to fight
either of the American ships, the Con-
stitution or the Chesapeake. Both
had been 1a the repair dock, but the
Chesapeake, armed with a select crew,
secreted tie challenge and was de-
feated 1■ a fifteen -minute battle.
Dr. Martin digressed from the story
of the battle to tell of the Uvea of
the seamen, the majority of whom
were recruited by preen gangs and the
simple expedient of combing the jails.
The pay received by these men was
about a cent a day, with a special bo-
nus of a shilling every time an enemy
craft was captured. Tbere was no
steam 1n those days. of course. and
all wort was of necessity done by
UM. �e were no fires on board
whiter -lid In summer fevers were
rampant between the hot decks of the
battleships. As many as 300 or 400
men were quartered In an 150 -foot
ship. But the men were treated well
by the officers and It was this good
treatment that formed the foundation

was served by members of the Legion. L. L. Knox and Mrs. Alex. Smith. Each
vice-president and her group had
charge of three monthly meetings and
each group carried out plans for the
raising of money. So successful were
these efforts, along with the annual
play and the annual bazaar, that the
Clrele was able to send $900 to - tbe
Presbyterial treasurer tor minion
work. In addition the Circle contrt-
buted 12898 to the special campaign
fund.
