The first Christmas I
could remember was when
1 was five. It was 1925
and everyone was in the
Christmas mood. Our
house was decorated beau-
tifully with boughs of
cedar and Christmas flow-
ers. I remember the tree
being quite tall that year
but maybe that was just
hecause I was so small.
The balls on the tree were
a golden yellow and the
angel on top looked very
angelic. Underneath were
presents wrapped nicely
that took up most of the
living room floor.
Christmas Eve night
was orre of my favorite
times. The girls would get
into their brand new silk
dresses and the boys
would get into their finest
suits. We would get into
our'car and drive to the
church for mass. When we
got home it felt so good to
get into my warm hed.
Even though 1 was tired it
was hard for me to get to
sleep hecause of all the
excitement. I was thinking
of all the wonderful things
that Santa would bring me
when I finally fell asleep.
That next 1 remember
was waking up and it was
Christmas morning. It was
time for joy! We opened
our gifts and the house
was filled with laughter.
To finish off Christmas the
maids brought in a fabu-
lous dinner of turkey,
cranberries, potatoes,
corn, and lots of pies!
But Christmas wasn't
always, this great. As the
years went on we got Tess
money. It was during the
Great Depression when
things got really bad but
the joy of Christmas never
left us.
The Spirit of giving
really came out during
those hard times. The
whole family still went to
church every Christmas
Eve and we were grateful
for whatever we got on
Christmas morning.
Instead of store hought
toys we got homemade
dolls and games. We
sometimes got'one really
special gift which was
usually a nice hook to
read. My brothers and sis-
ter got coloring books
which they loved. A very
great thing for us was
finding an orange in the
bottom of our stocking.
We were thankful for our
Christmas dinner which
was still the best meal of
the year. The turkey
wasn't as plump and there
wasn't as much food as
before. Through the good
times and the bad times
the Christmas spirit was
with us always.
Santa had a candy cane sleigh

Twas the night- before
Christmas...It was a dark
night. The children were
setting up. They set up the
Christmas cookies for the
jolly good old Mister
Santa Claus.
The children went to
hed to wait for Santa. The
Christmas tree was
already put up and deco-
rated with an angel on the
top of the tree.
Santa Claus and his
helpers, the 101 elves,
were working harder than
ever. They were making
candy bars and balls and
trucks..They put the big
sack in the sleigh and
woke up the reindeer.
Rudolph the red nosed
reindeer was in the front.
He lit up the whole town
with his nose.
The elves said goodbye
and Santa was off' in his
candycane sleigh. He
hrought toys to children
all around the world.
At Janet's and Thomas'
house he gave them all the
toys. They did not have
enough .r,om. Toys were
in the, bathroom. Toys
were in the kitclrn and in
the living room.t was all
over their rooms. Toys
were piled everywhere.
They ate their breakfast
and jumped in the pile of
presents. They ripped the
ALAAAA
Christmas wrap and they
opened every one of the
presents until they were
tired of doing that. They
looked around. There were
trains. dolls and teddy
hears and lots of other
toys they would like.
Mom and dad took all
the wrapping and ribbons
upstairs for the next year.
There were presents
that weren't opened. They
were for mom and dad.
Skates for dal and pots
and dishes for mom.
They went skating and
sliding with dad, while
mom made hot chocolate
in a mug. What a
Christmas!
