Avoid the Yueltide Highway by Bill Bresnahan Lucknow United Church As Christmas fast approaches, many concerned people open their date hooks and sigh, "I don't know how 1 can possi- -E li y get everything done between now and the 25th. It seems many of us get to that point as Christmas and New Years approach and it causes stress and anxiety which can dull the true spirit of the season. John Wesley (1 703 - 179 1) was a cler- gyman in the Church of England and founder ,,Methodist Movement. He is reporte4`thave said: "Though 1 am always in haste, 1 am never in a hurry because I never undertake more work that I can go through with calmness of spirit." At this time of year we find ourselves speeding down the "Yuletide Highway" well over the limit and hearing down hard on a section of road under construc- tion. Resolve to read one of the Gospels during December and meditate upon what it means that Christ came into the world. 3. Thou shalt make Christmas a family time. Do things together: decorate the tree, play games, bake cookies, shop, write cards, have friends over, visit a shut-in. 4. Thou shalt remember those who are less fortunate. Contribute significantly to an organization serving the needs of oth- ers throughout the year. 5. Thou shalt give thyself with every gift. Put some thought into the gifts you pur- chase. Give a, gift that represents you. It' possible, make something instead of huy- ing something. 6. Thou shalt learn to he a good receiver. Most of us have more trouble receiving than we do giving. 7. 'Thou shalt put music into Christmas. Put on those Christmas tapes and C'1)s Attend the special events, choirfests and Christmas programs in your area. Sing carols a} a family. K.
