Bruce County Council endorsed a resolution from Culross asking the Ministry uI Natural Resources to look at the problem of nuisance raccoons. Culross is increasingly concerned about a "tremendous population explosion" of raccoons locally, and the damage the ani- mals inflict on crops and tarn buildings. One suggestion is to divert money now spent on rabies control, and use it to investigate ways of control- ling raccoon population. The resolution stopped short of callinI_ for a bounty of the furry bandits. r ;SATURDAY NIGHT NOW NpW 17__ X17 AT THE ODERICH COLUMBUS CENTRE SAMMY, DECEMBER 2811996 $ TOTAL PR 47 IM ! Hydro will continue to rely on electricity output from Unit 1 until it is laid up in the year 2000. Retubing means replac- ing pressure tubes in CANDU reactors which develop metallurgical problems as they age. Bruce A's Unit 2 reac- tor was shut down two years ago, after Hydro decided against retubing it. Writing off Unit I will not affect Hydro's propos- al to burn MOX fuel from dismantled nuclear weapons, Jim Burpee, general manager at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development said. He said work plans and staffing levels for Unit I for the next. three years will not be affected by the board's decision. "We will be proceeding with spacer location and repositioning work on some of the fuel channels next year," Burpee said. He added that without this work, the unit would have been laid up in 1997. Improving nuclear per- formance continues to be Hydro's priority and the decision not to commit to retubing at this time is not unexpected, given Hydro's recent performance prob- lems with nuclear, Burpee said. Ron Dugas, Power Workers Union spokesman, said Hydro's move is good news. "There will he no impact on .staff at the site up to the year 2000. Then management will have to make a decision (about retubing). Hydro will be in a better position to put together a business case justifying the retube because it has already written off the cost of Unit 11 These LCPS students were part of the Christmas Around The World concert last week.
