Another person sug- gested the language, used in the tabloid circulated in area newspapers by the DHC in late October, was not easy to understand. In that tabloid there was an area for readers to rate cri- teria. It was to be clipped and returned to the DHC. (It was in the Lucknow Sentinel). Five hundred and seventeen surveys were returned by readers in the counties. Another person asked if the quality of the task force's options would he considered as flawed because one-third of the people using the Wingham hospital come from Bruce County and were not con- sulted formally in the process. Hook replied that when the task force looked at the utilization and were determining the bed num- hers they were aware that people from outside the district use hospital ser- vices in Huron and Perth. She was pushed for a yes or no answer to "Do you think it seriously flaws the quality of the three options'!" "I don't believe it seri- ously flaws them, no," she answered. When asked why the DHC didn't have to cost out the three options, Gillis said it was a "deci- sion to do open houses before costing so that we got the information to the public as soon as possible after it was developed." When pushed, Gillis said the consultants gave a ball park figure of between $3 to $5 .million for consolidation of administrative and support services. A Belgrave mother, Yvonne Fisher, asked, "Who has the right to place a value on my chil- dren's lives and how .can anyone find the life a child from one community Less valuable than that of another." Fisher fives i0 minutes from Wingham hospital, and said she could he there in live min- utes in an emergency. From that comment Hook, said, "What •we heard (from consultation process) is that emergency services need to be Tess than 30 minutes and that's what the task force is looking at. ... The task force does not have an interest in depriving peo- ple of service but rather in trying to ensure that peo- ple have consistent access to high quality services." The father of a iD ycar- old who suffered a heart attack at the age of eight, said, "It' this hospital (Wingham) is closed, my son won't make it to Sick Kids. He can't wait 30 minutes to get to Goderich. Goderich doesn't need a secondary hospital. Let's get our act together and take care of these kids, because if we don't keep our he spitals open there's going to be a lot more people dead." There was a flurry of action as t"he group pro- ceeded to ,a curtained -off area of the room where they were given "feed- back" sheets on the options and asked to list the strengths, weaknesses and suggested revisions on all three. Task force members were -stationed at informa- tion booths displaying the three optics. One mem- her was asked what she thought of the options. "Ridiculous," was the reply. She questioned .the efficiency and said she hoped the options wouldn't stand. "However it's a starting point." West Wawanosh Reeve Bob -Hallam talks to one of the DHC representatives at the meeting held last Thursday in Wingham.
