Page 18 - Lucknow Sentittiel, Wednesday, December 4, 1996 Theme of meetings is Christmas Unit 1 Unit 1 of the C1CW met in the church parlor on Nov. 26. Shirley Bolt was in charge of the worship on Advent. Advent starts the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Advent means coming, and the green wreath symbolizing no beginning and no end. Noma Campbell lit the first candle representing Joy and the Scripture. We sang hymn "Silent Night." Grace Gibson lit the second candle of Peace, Ella gave the prayer of Peace, followed by the hymn "While Shepherds watched their flocks by night." Lois Walden lit the third candle of Love. Ella read the Scripture, fol- lowed by hymn "Joy to the World." Shirley lit the white Christmas candle after extinguishing the three other candles. Jean Conley played a musical number, and Shirley read a poem "Was it really so'?" Ella opened the busi- ness with a prayer. Eleven members answered the rollcall by naming a kind- ness I plan to do for Christmas. The minutes were read and approved. Noma gave the treasurer's report. The offering was collected and the meeting closed with the Benediction. \. Unit 2 Anna May Hunter On Nov. 26, Unit 2 ladies of the Lucknow UCW met at River Valley Apartments for their Christmas meeting. Ruth Mathers and Laura Sterner were pro- gram convenors. Laura welcomed the ladies and offered prayer. Throughout th-e pro- gram Ruth read several scriptures from Isaiah on the prophecy and from Luke on the birth of Jesus, which were interspersed with mediations read by Laura and carol singing, and a candle was lit for Joy. Jesus brought joy, to the world, God is with us let us rejoice this Christmas season, and remember the virgin birth. Laura also lit the candle for freedom; men and women should speak out against oppression, and injustice. Jesus came into the world to bring freedom l Lucknow CW to all the people. The meeting closed with the singing of Hark the Herald Angles Sing and a prayer for peace, - a peace that we must work towards. Phyllis Morrison read an article on the Least Coin and the good it does for less fortunate in the world. Thirteen members answered the rollcall with some kindness they will do at Christmas. Laura read a thank you letter from Rev. Gerald McFarlane thanking the ladies for the donations toward furnishing the Marion McFarlane room at Five Oakes. Unit 3 by Bev Thompson The Lucknow United Church Women, Unit 3, met Nov. 26 for their Christmas meeting. Nancy Gibson opened the meet- ing with a reading "The Christmas Symbol." Nancy Gibson, Shirley Brook's and Wilda Campbell presented the worship service on the seven Gifts of God which are Rest, Keys of the Kingdom, Power Over Evil Spirits, Livltlg Water, Bread of Heave'h, Eternal Life and Legacy of Peace. Christmas carols were sung throughout the pro- gram. Jane Treleaven, leader, presided for the business opening with a poem "Life's Lantern." Rollcall was answered with Christmas tradition in your family and a dona- tion for poinsettias for Pinecrest and Maple Breezes. Marlene Struthers reported that Nimble Fingers made mitts and toys for the Christmas bas- kets the Salvation Army are distributing, and tea towels for the church kitchen. Kathleen Collyer, for Citizenship, read an article by Marion Best about the new hymn hook. Postcards with a picture of the church are being sold for $1 with proceeds to go to the Sunday School campers. Hey, Everybody Look At This! We extend sympathy to the family of Florence ,Hodgins who passed away at Kincardine hospital where she has been a patient. The remains rest- ed at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home where the funeral service was held on Friday afternoon. Mr, and Mrs. Stewart Lane of Lucknow visited on Sunday evening with • Kinlough Bessie Maulden. Janet Nielsen of Bracebridge spent a few days with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Eton Bushell. Congratulations to Allan and Lucy Miller who hosted a special day to mark the 140th Anniversary of , the•• Holyrood Post Office. On Friday the Millers held an open house for friends to drop in and enjoy tea and coffee and a special anniversary cake and other treats with their names entered in a draw for a Post Office souvenir. Judo kids continue winning ways Ian Macdonald and Megan MacDonald attend- ed the Ontario Open Judo Championship in Toronto last weekend, lan placed first and received gold, while Megan brought home the bronze. in their ,respective classes. Forty-four members and guests gathered for the Ripley and District Horticultural Society's potluck Christmas meeting last week.
