Second allegation: that
UNICEF was immunizing
women of child hearing
age in the Philippines and
Mexico an anti -tetanus
toxoid which contained
hCG (human Chorionic
Gonadotrophin) thus caus-
ing sterility.
"Tetanus toxoid vaccine
is routinely given to
women of childbearing
age in developing coun-
tries to prevent post natal
tetanus infections which
entail a high fatality rate
for both mothers and
babies. Some pressure
groups claimed that -,the
tetanus toxoid vaccines,
with an anti -fertility com-
ponent, were being used
secretly to limit population
growth in target countries.

However when vaccines
from seven different man-
ufacturers were indepen-
dently tested by the US
Food & Drug
Administration (FDA), thu:
Netherlands Government,
and by laboratories in sev-
eral countries, the results
were all negative.

Funds currently con-
trihuted by Canadians are
used to continue to work
to meet the goals for the
year 2000 that UNICEF
set following the World
Summit for Children in
1990; clean safe water and
sanitation for all; reducing
child malnutrition by 50
per cent; •90 per cent
immunization of children;
elimination of Polio; erad-
ication of Guinea Worm
disease; elimination of
Iodine Deficiency
Disease; ending Vitamin A
