Many changes have taken place over those years, but when one steps into the little corner of the Holyrood General Store that houses the post office, it is like stepping back in time. As dignitaries and pre- sent and former rural mail contractors reminisced with present postmaster Lucy Miller, stories of the past were. shared; some from past Sentinel articles and some from the current contractor Gerald Murray, whose late father, Alphonse Murray, started off the family's associa- tion with 'mail' back in 1947. The Holyrood post office was first established on Aug. 1, 1856, with Murdoch MacKenzie as the postmaster. It is inter- esting to note, from Sentinel archives, that the Holyrood office was first served from Kinloss, and originally was a weekly service each Saturday. Thomas Hodgins was the first contractor to deliver the mail between these two points. His four-year contract specified he could deliver by either horse- back, wagon, cutter or sleigh. Gerald Murray remem- bered as a youngster in the '40s when his dad had the RR. 2 delivery. He'd strike off with the horse and cut- ter in the morning, drop Gerald off at school. and pick him up on his return trip. There is no doubt that as usage of the automobile became more common, the rural contractor's job was made a little easier. She had been the contractor on RR 1 for five years before that. Imelda retired in March 1996, and Gerald took over the contract. He too had previous experience having delivered on RR 2 from 1977 to 1992. Today, the three rural routes served from the Holyrood post office cov- ered 103 km, with 186 dropoffs. It covers nearly all of Kinloss township. and juts into Greenock and Culross townships. Lucy Miller (centre) , the Holyrood postmaster, was presented with a cer- tificate of merit from the government of Canada, by Paul Steckle, Huron - Bruce MP, last week, when the Millers held open house to mark the 140th anniversary of the post office. Dave Bourne, postal retail rep, Gerald Murray, rural route contractor and Reeve Jim Boyle were also on hand for the occasion. The county's waste management consultants are in the process of plan- ning a 'two -zone' approach for waste man- agement in the county. The plan would be to 'optimize' and close exist- ing landfill sites in several municipalities while land- fill sites near Exeter and in Morris Twp. are devel- oped to create two waste management zones (north and south) for the future. Then, as each smaller landfill sites was 'opti- mized,' the municipalities that used those sites would have their waste• re -direct- ed ed to one of the newt) developed and expanded sites.
