Quilter's work advances to provincial

hazards a guess that she
has been q.itilting for
well over 50 years. From
this beautiful art, learned
at her mother's side,
Mrs. MacKenzie has
derived a great deal of
pleasure over the years.
• And to top things off,
her Conway Album quilt
recently placed first at
the the Ontario
Agricultural Society's
District 10 competition,
where it was one of 24
entries from 27 fairs in
Grey and Bruce. All the
entries placed first at
their respective fair com-
petitions.
Mrs. MacKenzie's
Conway Album then
became eligible to be
judged at the provincial
l atpl. This latter compe-
t: n, for 15 districts,
takes place in February
at the Royal York Hotel,
in Toronto, during the
annual Ontario
Association of
Agricultural Societies
convention. The first
place quilt will then be
forwarded to the
Agricultural Museum in
Milton where it will go
on permanent display.
Bev Fry, district 10
homecraft representative,
said it is quite a decision
for Mrs. MacKenzie to
make, because she will
no longer own the quilt if
it wins first. Some mone-
tary compensation is
given to the winner. Last
week, Mrs. MacKenzie
said she has decided to
allow the quilt to be
judged at the provincial
level.
The Conway Album
pattern was designed by
Irma Gail Hatcher, of
Conway, Arkansas. It
features `ruching' which
for Mrs. MacKenzie was
a new technique that
gives a more three
dimensional effect. She
has no idea how many
hours she put into mak-
ing the 94" x 94" quilt.
Over the years, Mrs.
MacKenzie has had three
other quilts advance
from the local level to
the district level, but this
is a first for her to com-

Quilting has a thera-
peutic aspect to it, and
Mrs. MacKenzie says
she finds it very relaxing,
as do many other quit-
ters. As a member of the
Five Star Quilters Guild,
she learns new tech-
niques shared by others.
"Quilting is a learning
experience and sharing
experience as well," she
said. -

is a display case for the
beautiful works the tal-
ented artist has complet-
ed. Currently, Mrs.
MacKenzie is working
on completing quilts for
each of their 10 -grand-
children.
West Wawanosh Township
Appeal filed with OMB
regarding minor variance
An appeal has been made to the
Ontario Municipal Board regarding
West Wawanosh council's approval of
a minor variance for Brian Wightman,
at Lot 26, Conc. 4.
Council, after ,investigating several
areas, approved the minor variance at
its Oct. 1 meeting, allowing the separa-
tion distance to be reduced from 440
feet to 289 feet. This would permit the
location of a single wide mobile home: •
At the Nov. 5 meeting, council
decided to have the property remea-
sured by Harold House, of the Ontario
Ministry of 'Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs and Karl MacNaughton,
the municipality's building inspector.
The measurement has since•been
taken and the clerk treasurer says the
distance is within the definition of a
minor variance according to the town-
ship's . zoning bylaw.
Prior to the Nov. 1 regular meeting,
council held a public meeting to hear
further information on a proposed zon-
ing bylaw amendment to change the
zoning on part of Lot 13, Conc. 4
(Sherwood). Council subsequently
approved the proposal. The property is
now zoned village residential low den-
sity (from developmental).
Approval was given to sever a 50
acre parcel from a 150 acre holding at
Lot 19, Conc. 3 (Sherwood).
Council will be looking for someone
to replace the current animal control
officer who has resigned. The person
will work on a complaint basis only.
These little Puddleduckers got their exercise last week, when after all.
the snow fell they decided to make a BIG snowman - so they walked,
and walked, and walked some more and finally sat down at the snow-
man's feet to take a break!. (Helm photo)
