to the Auxiliary -a touch
of class, along with a ten-
der heart; always the one
to say the right thing
when needed.
Anna Johns -tone, a
member for 48 years, has
served as president, sec-
retary, first and second
vice, and sergeant of
arms, the position she
still holds. Anna is a
kind, generous and wise
person, who is willing to
share her knowledge and
experience with all. The
auxiliary has a little piece
of gold in Anna.
Joan Robinson has
been president of the
auxiliary for a total of 15
years of her 48 years ser-
vice. She has also served
as secretary, first and sec-
ond vice, sergeant of
arms, executive, flag
bearer and sports officer.
She is currently president
and sports officer. Joan is
the backbone of the
Auxiliary. She has strong
leadership qualities;
states her opinions and
listens to others.
Over her 43 years ser-
vice, Susan McNaughton
has served as president,
first and second vice, flag
bearer and presently sits
on the executive. Susan
attends most meetings
and helps at every func-
tion. She always has a
story to" tell and has a
calming effect when
heated discussions occur.
Her greatest asset to the
Auxiliary is being stead
fast and her belief in the
organization.
For 30 of Tena
Gardner's 31 years in the
organization, she has
served as the treasurer.
She is a vital member
who not only keeps accu-
rate books, but is an asset
to the meetings. Tena is
always willing to lend a
hand and to guide new
members along.. This
friendly, outgoing and
trustworthy woman is a
Huron County Council
treasure to the Auxiliary.
Alice Clark, currently
on the executive, has
been an enthusiastic
member for 30 years. She
has held the office of first
and second vice and
served as president for
two years. She exhibits
kind, friendly, steadfast,
strong leadership quali-
ties, is helpful and
always has a kind word
and a smile.
Kay Thacker has been
a member for 23 years.
She has held the office of
first and second vice, and
president. Currently she
is a member of the exec-
utive. Kay is a person
you can depend on, no
matter what is asked of
her. She is a solid forth -
Coming person whose
opinions are asked for
and listened to. Kay's
sense of fair play helps
maintain a good balance
at the meetings.
Road transfer too costly
by Blake Patterson,
Huron County is ask-
ing for a meeting with
Ontario's Minister of
Transport to say, "We
can't afford the roads you
gave us."
At the -Nov. 7 meeting
of Huron County
Council, the county
agreed to request a meet-
ing with the provincial
Minister of Transport Al
Paladini to say the county
is 'not in, a position to
accept the the transfer of
highways 83, 84 and 87
without adequate com-
pensation.
The minister will also
be asked for the
$400,000 needed to
reconstruct the Black
River Bridge (built in
1947) on Highway 83.
At the Sept. 5 meeting
of council, the county
was informed that by
April 1, 1997, • the
province will transfer
Highway 83 from
Highway 21 to the Perth
County :boundary;
Highway 84 from
Highway 21 to Hensall;
an•d Highway 87 from
Highway 86 to the
Wellington • County
boundary. The transfer
represents a 70.6 kilome-
tre increase to the county
road system. •
The county will
receive a one-time only
grant of $4,465,950 to
compensate these trans-
fers. A June 1995 study,
however, indicates that a
total of $6,442,500
would be needed to
address the needs of the
transferred ,highways and
their bridges.
The short fall will
have to be picked up by
• the county.
That was the basis of
the decision to ask the
provincial minister for a
meeting.
In a roads report from
the Planning and
Development Committee,
council was told that. the
county must make it
known to the province
that the funding being
transferred is notade-
quate.
• The report provided a
detailed breakdown of
the expenses required to
maintain the county's
roadways and included
several suggestions on
how to deal with
increased roads and
