The birds are coming! The birds are
coming! They've ai iyed in Lucknow t
Take cover!
Last week I had a flashback to the
days when Alfred Hitchcock's thriller
movie The Birds was popular, I don't
know how many years ago that was. I
do know that e. ver'ytune I see more than
a dozen bids* gathering that movie
comes back in full blown
color, or maybe it was
black and white.
Anyway, one ;evening,•
lash week`. while I was
watering the plants, 1 heard
this noise and looked up, :.
Moving in a south to north
direction were- thousands of
black birds. l guess -you'd call it flock-
ing. Now f've seen birds flock before,
but never have I, seen this many at
once. I -could actually hear the flutter.:
ing of their wings, or maybe nay ears
were playing tricks.
I dropped the hose and my legs start-
ed
to carry me quickly to the :house; to
avoid: the menacing beaks of those
birds. Reality set in, ;.l..stopped in my
tracks. Get a grip woman,' this is real.

life not a movie. <. .

streak. continued.
The next night,,the same, thin, hap-
pened, and my cohort here in the office
said :she had also .seen the spectacle on
a different .night.
.,Arising early, a few mornings later, I
could hear birds chirping. Looking out,
what did- I see. Thensanie performance,
only this time they were goingnorth to
south.
What is going on?
Is this simply an annual occurrence
I have , ne ver witnessed before? Do
they know something •we don't? Are
they preparing to go south already?
. Whatever, those birds are coming
and going over .mypart of the Sepoy
village and Hitchcock's thriller is still
well -lodged in nay grey matter:

Dear editor:,
At the Craft Festival, ,I enjoyed browsing
and I _ bought a couple of items,. I then went
to Crystal Elliott's booth and made a final
purchase:
.Later I realized I was missing,a parcel.
After a couple of phone calls, I was told
that I could pick up my lost item at Ross
Errington's, it having been turned in by
Crystal.
This is certainly a great reason to shop
locally! Thank yon.

.he word
spoiler, spoils
Spoiler n,. Spoils npt from
the . Latin 'polilim, mean-
ing "the hide torn from an
animal," or "booty,"
comes the word 'spoils,
meaning the incidental
benefits reaped by the.
winner of a fight or con-
test, The phrase "to the
victor belongs the spoils"
sound`s as if it should have
a_martial origins, but in fact
was popularized iii 1831
by Senator Marcy and
refers to the "spoils sys-
tem" which was first used
by Thomas Jefferson.
This.. is a practice
whereby the victorious
party in an election cam-
paign rewards • its support-
ers by appointing them, to
public office.
A spoiler is a third can-
didate in an election
whose only effect is to
take votes from one of the
main candidates, and: a
spoilsman is someone
who looks for profit out
of politics. Perish. the
thought!
