xercising in the
heat requires caution
No matter what shape
you're in, there's always a
danger of dehydration and
'heat illness whenyou
exercise or play in the
heat.
Exercising causes,your
body temperature, to rise
as you work your muscles
and increase your metab-
olism. Body heat must be
lowered or your body
won't function normally.
Fluids lost through evapo-
ration of sweat may cause
dehydration which can
lead to heat related ill-
ness. Excessive loss of
fluid causes stress to the
heart, harms the way our-
muscles
ur"muscles work and con-
tributes to heat illness.
-Dress comfortably in
lightweight, loose fitting
,natural fibers that breath.
-Drink plenty of fluids
before, during and after
activity. You should drink
at least four to eight
ounces of fluid every 15
to 30 minutes during
activity. Vegetable and
fruit juices, water and caf-
feine -free carbonated
beverages are recom-
mended. Avoid excessive
alcohol, caffeine and
sugar as they will cause
further dehydration. -
-Drink fluids even if you
aren't thirsty.
-Limit exposure to heat.
Exercising early in the
morning or in the late
evening. Take baths or
showers to cool off.
