The early bird gets the worm, so to .speak, when it comes to booking bands, etc. Separate school board against ed tax revolt The Bruce -Grey separate school board doesn't agree with a move ,by one Bruce countymunicipality to stop collecting taxes Albemarle 'wp. council has told the province and, both local school boards that it won't collect education taxes from its ratepayers after Jan. 1, 1997. At the same time, the township wants the province to .change .legislation so that a "fair and equitable" system for funding education is established. "We further requestthat legislation be, enacted that recognizes that educa- tion is not a service to property," the township said in a letter to Education Minister John Snobelen. • The Bruce -Grey separate board replied to Albemarle's move by quoting the Education Act, which says munici- palities mtist levy and collect education taxes. "There does. not appear to be any flexibility for a municipality to proceed in the direction you are going," board chairman 'Ken Waechter said, in a letter. His letter went on to suggest Albemarle 'could be "subject* to. discipl.in ry` action,'' ' by the province if it refuses to collect taxes for,local school boards. Waechter didn't disagree with Albemarle's attemptto change the cur- rent legislation. . "That would be between municipali- ties and Queen's Park," he said. "As it stands right now, it's our understanding that the mandate fox municipalities is that they have to collect the education taxes for school boards." Waechter wouldn't predict what -steps the board might take if Albemarle goes through with its plan to abandon education tax collection. The Bruce board of education, meanwhile, is wait- ing for more information on the issue from the. Western Ontarioregion of the Ministry of Education.
