Six years after the 'seen' was 'planted', the
Lucknow Greenway project has reached its fund
height, and welcorneseveryone to reap the benefits.
"The ,project has reached its goal," said George
Gibson, who was :. aster of cerem vies for the official
opening last Thursday. It was also Gibson who plant-
ed the seed. The story goes that when Gibson was a
village councillor in 1990 and environmental con-
cerns were being addressed, his doodling led to what
would become a cooperative effort by many =erganiza-
tions, individuals and MVCA_ to bring the 'prject to
successful fruition.
"We invite you to catch a fish, walk a trail, watch a
bird, enjoy a picnic:..." said Gibson.
Three trees were dedicated: during the, ceremony;
all in. memory of men who had.. dedicated themselves
to the betterment of their community and Worked ' in
numerous' ways towards a'greener village.
The families of the late Oliver Glenn and Dewayne
Greig dedicated tree's at Waterworks Park,., and the
family of the late Al Hamilton honored his memory
with a memorial tree at the sports complex.
The Scouts and Cubs had the honor of cutting the
green ribbon at Waterworks Park in recognition of
their "many bands make light work" attitude, said
Gibson.
The ceremony was an official opening as well as
an official closing for the project -that has spanned six
years and involved service .organizations, schools and
individuals.
Phil Beard, .the Maitland Valley Conservation '
Auth,•-rity project coordinator, was "the glue that kept
the project together," said Gibson. "Without Phil's
dedication and support we wouldn't have been able to.
hold this project together."
In his remarks, Stuart Reavie, village reeve and
Bruce county warden, said, "The project will have
great benefits not only for our community but the sur-
rounding communities. We are fortunate to have had
this project evolve from a vision to reality."
Reavie paid tribute to The contributions of Al
Hamilton, Dewayne Greig and Oliver Glenn, and hll
s the volunteers - individuals and organizations who
pulled together and worked over six years to complete
the project. .
Diane Hankenhaf, representing Barb Fisher, Bruce
County MPP, presented the village with a scroll to
honor the completion of the project..
Councillor Rick. McMurray, the village's- MVCA
representative, said Lucknow's cooperative manner of
working together. "will set the standard for others."
Bill Johnstone, president of the Lucknow
District Lions who spearheaded Greenway, spoke of
that organization's pride in the pr s jest, and introduced
a new project The Memorial Tree Plan for lands
around the spots complex. b
Murray Elston, who during his political career was
chairperson of the Ontario' Roundtable on
Environment and Economy, was guest speaker.

that for the benefit of those of today and the future.
