Ws the perfect opportunity to think about all the aroma and odors there are in this area that many of us take for granted. While making the trip from Tiverton to Lucknow this week, there was a plethora of smells you can +.nly get a whiff of in .€a rural area. The• most pro- nounced is, of course, manure. No mat- ter the smell is often offending, it trig- gers a true sense of the season. It's' like the smell of fresh cut grass; you don't realize you missed it ail win- ter until you smell it after the first cut- ting in the spring. Even dirthas a good smell at this time of year. Strangely there are few :naturally- occuring'smells' in the winters Snow, : - ice, road salt. and "sand all have no smell”. The only ones that tome to mind are the smell of snowmobile exhaust, AN --MINIIMINPINIIINNIIIIIMMINIIIMIMMINIMMOI.MION. he roses which 1 like, and the delicious sma11 of smoke Jrom the chimney . f a 'h)us:'e with a wood -burning stove. The best smells am 'definitely found in warm weather. Think about the smell in the air the morning after a thunder- storm, cedar, the smell of your lei, arm after the windows have been open all day, sheets that have been dried on the els.>thes line, a new book or a clean baby. As always, there's ' some bad that must go along with the good. Most could do without the smell in the air when a winter's worth of dog doo shows itself on the lawn, a damp basement, hot asphalt or a not -so -clean baby. This is the perfect time to think about what it would be like without a sense of s Oriel!. Just imagine .if you couldn't smell daffodils, horses, roast beef cooking in the oven, etc. Apologies to :those who 'suffer from allergies at this time of year. sco n. on January 16, . 1749; at the Haymarket Theater in London, the famous "bot- tle hoax" took place. Notices.. ,had appeared advertising an unusual show that was to begiven at; the theater. A per- forrner advertised that he would play on a walking cane .the music of every instrument "to ,surprising perfection,°' and that he would "without equivo- cation" climb into a quart bottle and, while•sitting inside it, sing a nurriber of songs. An excited capacity audience assem- bled on the appointed night and took their seats expectantly. Then .they sat... and sat... and sat.. No performer appeared. The crowd had been dupes, it was a fiasco, to use the Italian word for. "bottle". The audience was so enraged that they began to pull the theater apart. Among thorn, smashing things with enthusaism,' was the Ac- tor of the. Battle .of Culloden in 1146, ,Bonnie Prince Charlie's enemy, the Duke of Cumberland, "Bitcher" Cumberland. Although the real ream son' is not clear why the word fiasco has come to mean a complete. and embarrassing failure, per- haps 'the "bottle hoax" had some influence' on the word's usage in everyday speech: error reflection (Pat Livin stun photo) Letter policy The Lucknow Sentinel welcomes readers' views and opinions.
