collection fee the to wlnn is charging the
board.
The overall budget of $69,362,715
calls for spending cuts in every depart-
ment
epa t-ment except debt costs. That budget
will increase 20 per cent because of.
debentures for building projects,
including renovations for junior kinder-
garten, that the board took on last year.
The budget reaffirms earlier board
decisions to keep the junior kinder-
garten program running in 1996-97,
though the elimination of noon -hour
bussing means, it will be an all day,
alternate 'day program,
There are no staff layoffs orprogram
nuts in the budget, but the board is still
waiting for more teachers to take up
one of the options in a.package intend-
ed to, voluntarily reduce staff by
-September. Inglis named staffing levels,
outstanding grievances against the
board, and . a. 'slim plant ,maintenance
budget as "areas of risk" in the budget.
Direct.'r of Eduction Paul
Martindale called -this year's budget
"historic" b cause for the first time
provincial brant revenue will be -less
than the local levy. "The balance has
iriOw been shifted officially," Martindale
'said. "We now have an assessment poor
county that. is funding the majority of
the cost of education in Bruce county,
That is unfair.'
Trustee Don Stobo said the board is
"caught in a squeeze" between provin-
cial grant cuts andthe lack of options
to make,p for the lostrevenue "ln the
long run the students will be the loser,"
Stobo said, adding a `guarantee" that
class . size' will increase under the new
budget.
"I tried to convince some people in
this system that a wage rollbackis the
way to go.= A two per cent rollback
would raise us one million dollars," he
said, pointing'out that the iirollbalck
would include trustees.

Knechtel9s Care for Share program gave a big boost t fund=raising
for the Lucknow and District Sports Complex Over the past year, five
cents from every Knechtel product purchased at Lucknow Village
Market was earmarked for the project. Brian and Kathy Knechtel,
owners of Lucknow nil#age e Market, along with Knechtel reps Don
Riddell and Don Parkinson, handed over a big cheque for -$10,000 to.
Tom Helm of the fund-raising committee. It was rather fitting that
Brian and Kathy were able to do this on their 10th anngversary of
being in business in Lucknow when a huge crowd was on hand for
the presentation and mammoth taste -testing evening. (Pat Livingston
