byPat LivingstonThe student.body and staff at
Lucknow Central Public Schools had the
opportunity to "¢ ee a slice li fe `a little
different that we are accustomed to,"
said teacher Bill McKeon when a•group
of Japanese students visited'last week.
The students and their teacher,
Naoyuki Matsuoka, were staying in
Wingharn where they were billeted.
with, studentsfrom the Wingham Public
School.
McKeon and Matsuoka first met in,
198 when the Japanese teacher carne
to Canada to live with them for the bet-
ter part of a year, as part of a program
where. various people from that country
have come erehto improve their
English skills. Matsuoka was attached
to the Wingham Public School at that
time. He worked as a volunteer with the.
children and learned how the Canadian
school system works.
When Matsuoka ° returned.home he
opened his own private school in the
'Gifu area, about 400 km from Tokyo,
"Children. in Japan g`o to two levels.
of school," explains McKeon. They go
to regular school and ,when those class-
es are finished' for the day, they .go to
other schools for specialized instruction
in subjectsof their choice. Matsuoka's
school has two classrooms: one where
he teaches English, and another where
a second teacher teaches math and sci-
ences.
McKeon said that in the course cf.a
unication
week, pMatsuoka would see 120 Stu-
dents. Part of the program :that he insti-
tutted was to bring the students to
Canada. This is about year five, but it is
the first time: that any of the visitors
haye:been to Lucknow Centrm..:
e bulk of the visiting students are
14 or 15 years'of age,
"We had our eyes opened," said
McKeon. "These are very impressive
young people who have 'a tremendous"
amount to offer. I felt very fortunate
that we had the opportunity of having
them come to our school; to be able to
see thatpeople all over the world are
the same. I know our children were
very, favorably impressed with these
people. At the same time, they. arre.no :.
different than we are?'
During their visit to the school, the
students broke .into smaller groups and - ;.
spent- time in various classrooms
singing songs, teaching Japanese, play-
ing
lay ing games and showing students the
Japanese art: form origami. In the after-
noon, the Grade, 7 'and. 8 classes took
their new friends skating at the arena
This was the first time , for many of .. j
them to experience this sport.
"From! cultural activity, you can't
beat it," ' said McKeon. "What we are
trying to do in this world is to build
these bridges'of communication to
other people and this is certainly one
good way of trying to do it. I just wish
we had more opportunities:to do it "
