Tack and Rose Hayes'
home on the east end of
Campbell Street, Lucknow,
was destroyed by fire on`
Monday.
The--Lucknow and
District Fire .Department
was alerted- about 11:02
.a.m. and were on the scene..
for about four hours. "The
high winds were a bad, bad
factor," said Chief Peter
Steer.
Although the structure is,
still standing, Steersaiid .the -
house was totalled inside. It
is believed the fire started in
' the basement, in the vicinity
of the .furnace. "Charring
was very extreme in the
basement," said Steen
The fire *went up the'
Wales in the older part of the'"
house, into the upper level
•
and spread, causing multi-
ple fires.
"Every time we tried to
vent it, the wind acted as a
draft We couldn't get ahead
of it," Steer said.
Ripley Fire Department
wasactivated because if the •
fire had broken through the
Hayes home, there was dan-
ger, that the windswould
cause the fire to travel to an
adjacent home owned by
Kim and Wayne Phillips.
Steer said his crew really
appreciated- the help, of
Kevin `Carter, a Wingham
firefighter ,who was. passing
by and stopped to help set
up the equipment. Eldon
and • Lynn . Grist of
Armstrong akery . ;kept AO
