recent study linking.
radon and power lines to..
cancel; has renewed contro'o
versies around the power
line issue.
While thew is no biologi-
cal link between power
lines: and cancer, Dr, Murray
McQuigge, medical officer
of health for Bruce Grey
and Owen Sound, said there
could . be a "tenuous catise
and effect, relationship."
Dr. McQuigge has been
studying the subject for a
number :of years.
"We're Suspicious, but we
can't put a finger 011 it," he
said
While attending.. ;the
Harvard . School ,af'ublic
Health,: ' and ;earning his
Masters: Degree in, Public
Health six years ago, Dr.
McQuigge was involved in
a project. which looked at
the : relationship between
electromagnetic fields and ,
cancer.
arotrnd power lines
He studied, marry papers r
on the subject and 4111;ew the
conclusion if you lived near
Hydro lines, within 100 feet
of a. transformer* there was a"
20 percent higher-ch,ance of
increase in childhood
leukenmia, If you were an
electrical worker, you might
have an increased :chance of
developing a brain tumor
But. Dr. McQuigge said,
there has never been a good
explanation of why.
Electromagnetic fields
were a problem:,but we
could, never find a. biologi-
cal reason."
He said Nancy Wertheimer,
an American epidemiologist
took .a lot of flak over a
study she did in 1979; She
linked 'a'higher incidence of
childhood : leukemia in
Americas children living
within 100 feet of :a trans-
former.
"That study was credible:
It has been substantiated six
tithes ;that' I know of," Dr.
tgge said
e added another paper
'was published in 1986, re-
affirming V.ertheinaer°s
f innings. .
But, Dr, McQuigge said,
over the years therehasn't
been a good biological link
,between cancer.ani d cleetro4
magnetic fields. Hoyever,
researchers h eve had a con-
tinuing sense of unease,
Ile hasn't seen the study
which BritishPhy sicists
released recently, linking
electromagnetic fields and
cancer.
That study' said power
lines attract radioactive par-
ticles from radon, a gas
emitted by uranium; which
is present almost every-
where,•' °he radioactive par-
ticles are believed > to cause
cancer,
The study found that•
power cables to ordinary
domestic appliances are
able toattract the radtoac-
live products ofradon pre-
sent in everyday room air
There 1.s evidence in similar
studies that the :same hawt-
fat conceitrati,,;us of radon
products 1 ay be present
around overhead power
lines. The electroimagnetic
fields associated with the
lines could produce .a vari-
ety of potential carcinogens,
The study's researchers
said their findins didn't
show that radon attracted by
power lines caused cancer,
but said more study was
needed on the subject.
"i't's fair to say that since
1979 there has been an
increased concern electro-
magnetic fields s may in
some way make people
more susceptible to cancer,"
Dr, McQuigge said.:
He added that given the
.length of time the subject
has been studied, "no rep-
utable researcher can look
you in the eye and say this
, definitely causes cancer."

active;, some are shy and '
others, are outgoing; some
are easy-going and others
are more sensitive, In the'
same way,' all parents are
different. Some parents
aren't bothered by lots of
noise ' and activity,, . for
example,while others find
it very stressful. These dif-
ferences explain why some
of the ideas that worked for
your friend or your neigh'-
bor may not, work for you
and Your child.
Let's. say you- are facing
another common problem;
chores: There are a number
of w.ays,to tackle this issue,
and your 'task is `to ,find the
• approach that will work
Well : for your family.
Asking your children to
help• solve the problem will.
encourage, them ;to co-oper-
ate with the.fiinal decision.
One possibility: at the
beginning of the weekend,
you could prepare a list of.
chores that need to be •done.
The children could then
choose from the list which
-chores they want to take on,.
and also choose when. the
chores would be completed.
As long .as everything 'is'
done by Sunnday night, all
therest is negotiable.
Problem -solving with
children may requite some
detective work on your :part,.
Long, afteir . they can talk,;
children May not be able to
express their feelings or
needs very clearly. When
five-year-old Germaine
started `schpl, he arrived
home every afternoon "like
a bear," his mother remem-
bers: He picked fights with
his :younger' sister, stomped
around the house, and com-
plained about
om-plained'about everything:
His mother wondered
first if there were problems
At, school, but severaldis-
cussions with the teacher
convinced her that
Germaine was.doing_fine
there.,
She had him go to bed
,earlier . for "a few nights, to
see if he was too tired, but
that made no difference:
Finally, he said something
about missing his mother,
'and she realized that he felt
a bit jealous of his little sis-
ter - who had- all afternoon
alone with Mom while he
was at 'schcSol, By fitting in
some special time for just..
"Mom and. Gertriaine," she.
was able to help him feel
happier.
.Learning to -negotiate
with your children and
solve pi bleims in ways that
make you all feel happy
will bring more harrrnony to
your family's daily life: And
the problem-solvingskills
your kids develop: as a
result will benefit them
throughout their lives. (For
