Ripley, for the interest of
oar readers,
The Bombing Mange was
located on Lot .21, Cone. 7.
'Township This land was
expropriated from an ease -
merit of Angus iVIaCDonald
and surrounding area,by the
Department of Transport,
and was loeated,..approxi-

Ripley;
Eddie Castleline and
Hugh Wyers, ex -RAF .veter--
ans,visited .with i1 eGee:last;
summer and shared 'their
memories. Both veterans,
now live in Ontario.
Hugh Wyers Was a\staff
pilot. "I remember "using the
Ripley Range orae or twice;
these. were Air . Bomber.
Courses. I believe they wer
phased out, .later °'in the ar
and the Port Albert trainees
were sent: to Fingal and
Jarvis.
- "Sometimes after a navi
gational exercise, and on
our way home,.. we used the
Ranges. The small bombs
were fitted in bob racks
fixed under the wings. The
bomb aitner would guide
me in left, left, steady- etc,
theft bombs away. This
• gave us ndditianal training
along. with .the navigational
courses .

would give us a fairly .accu-
rate 'reading on our tele-
scope lighter when the
smoke arose after the ,,prac-
tice bomb had landed.
"Smoke bombs were
used for daylight practice
and tilashbombs were used
for night practice.
"I remember vividly the
error made• by someone at
home 'base in Port Albert.
They loaded a night time
flash bomb onto .a day
flight,: resulting in a serail
a
'serious grass fire. Although
the four of4is ohclutif at the
time fought furiously, with
our jackets and coats, trying
to halt the spread of fire
,over the dry parched glFass
around us, it was with the
help of local framers, : their
wires and children, and the
late arrival of a hand drawn.
.fire engine, that the fire
finally subsided.
"This all happened some-
where: In the area of 1941-
43
9 143, then the bomb range-
closed
angclosed shortly after that,
only, to. make way for a mid-
° die of the Lake Range, one
mile off ..shore' in Lake
} uron from Kintail. •
"It must be assumed that
the Ripley farmers: bad sud-
denly lost their enthusiasm
for Bimbing Ranges, and
voiced their opinion.
"However, forthose of ins.
selected to man the ranges,
it was a disappointment
being away from camp for a
few days, ata time, enjoying.
the freedom and the best of
nations which we chose our-
selves."
