Celtic historywas the
topie of discussion when the
Bruce and Grey Branci of
the Ontario Genealogical
Society met recently. -
Helen Weaver explained
that there is -nota lot docu-
mentation on the Celts,. bu:t
they were known to . have
occupied the "lands of north-
ern continental Europe for
1,000 years.
Some of what is known:.
- the Romans referred -to
them as barbarians
they never establish.ed an
empire. like Rome;.
- research shows that these
people were vain and loved

of Celts
- . they traded when they
were not fighting;
they were a people who
loved horses;
- Christianity changed the
Celtic people; -
- they were the first to allow
women to inherit;
- they established what we
now' call the Highland,
Games.
Gradually, the Celts were
pushed west by more domi-
nant
forces: until they occu-
pied the ,lands of Brittony in
France,. Wales, . the
Highlands of Scotland and
western Ireland, Various
Celtic groups immigrated to
Canada where they formed
the third largest language -
group . in Canada- at
Confederation..
in Upper Canada they
•were more inclinedto inte-
grate with their neighbors...
However, in Nova Scotia,
particularly in Cape . Breton
Island (which reminded
them of home) they
remained more aloof.
We now see some results
.of this, as their descendants
are .currently turning back to
their roots through, music,
dance and a revivalof the
Celtic language:: (submitted.
