tracts expire.
BRA may also begin
testing the blue bag which
Veilleux referred to as the
"bottomless blue box."
,According to `Veilleux,.
ratepayers prefer the blue
bag three toone over the
blue box because it":s easier
to carry, reduces odor and
keeps recyclables from
blowing away,m the wind.

Let's see Ontario Hydro come up
with something like that!
"But there . are two major
disorders that can affect the
thyroid; hyperthyroidism and
hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism occurs when
the thyroid gland produces too
much hormone; hypothyroidism
occurs when the • thyroid
producestoo little. While
hyperthyroidism is generally
treated by surgical removal of
the thyroid; hypothyroidism - by
far the more eommon -of the two
is treated with medicine.
About ode -half of one percent
of adults have hypothyroidism,
that number increasing to about
five percent :among the . elderly.
Sufferers usually appear slow,:

Pharmacy Facts
Treatment for 'hypothyroidism
is with a,hormone supplement -
either a natural extract from the
thyroid' gland of animals, or
thyroxine, a synthetic hormone.
Regardless, hormone
replacement is a life-long
undertaking. A second down
side? Well, the' thyroid is a
sensitive. thermostat - while- too
much thyroxine may, lead .to
osteoporosis, too little. can cause
cholesterol abnormalities and
coronary heart disease. The:
' treatment of hypothyroidism can
be further complicated .by tire.
fact that: symptoms ante often
• sub -clinical - that is, they only
show up on a blood test Often
then the issue becomes whether
to.treat hypothyroidism ,or not,
consideririg treatment could
predispose patients to further
illness..
When hypothyroidism is
treated, ninety-nine percent of
the'time it is with the synthetic
hormone L-thyroxine.
Prescriptions are usually in
tablet form and taken the same
time every day. However, if you"
are taking L=thyroxine and you . miss a dose, make sure to take it
as soon as possible - unless you
are within two hours of the next
day's dose. In that :case, wait the
two hours; then double up on the
daily dosage. While the hormone
takes effect within. 48 hours, it
may take several weeks before
its effects.become evident.
In summary, be aware that
thyroxine can react with many
other drugs, including some for
asthma, epilepsy, depression,
blood: pressure, an4
contraception. Finally, never
stop stacking the drug without
consulting your doctor first.
Symptorns may return, and side
',effects could result.
