If the exemption is not granted, the boards will study the cost recovery and property taxation impacts of closing down. the school system for a 'fixed period each school year. This was done in Michigan until the recent implementation of finance reform. . '. Paul Sherratt, director of education at the -Perth board, said closing down the schools is not :a serious option trustees are consider- ing. Instead, it is intended to apply pressure on., the gov- ernment. The a three boards are low -spending boards :and don't have many places left to make cuts. They want the government to rec- ognizethis and . concentrate their cuts on boards who rds ent, 1itt lieu l ! Seri eiig W44e(4y0. 1.996 age 3 have not been as frugal a them, Chairperson Vel Tozer, of Listowel, said the motion' is not a serious one but the situation is.' Because of the ongoing cuts to low spend- ing boards, they may be forced to close ifthey run out of money. "We're pointing out how serious things could become if education finance reform doesn't come," " said Chairperson Tozer. Education finance refoi would look at how boards 'are fronded and how the cur- rent system of funding doesn't treat boards fairly according to their assess- ment situations. For - exam- ple, the Perth board is con- sidered; a wealthy_ board because .of the high assess- ment in Perth County. However, the majority of properties in. Perth are reesi- dlental, not business or industry. Any tax increases will go straightto property owners. Also, Sherratt said the board has made many cuts in the past .and there are few areas left for cuts. The board. -. has not received information on its cut in transfer pay a ents from the province. Marilyn Marklevitz, superintendent of t'inanae, said she, hopes the long wait a>it for the infor- mation means the ministry is putting a lot of"time, and. thought into the cuts they make and the situations boards face.
