HANOVER--Families of
students at Sacred Heart High in
Walkerton will get fetters from
the board saying that a ski, trip
being organized for the March,
break is not authorized by the
school,
The trip to Mont Ste. Anne in
Quebec is a pack, age from a
London travel service, and raised
concern from trustees because of
a brochure . that advertises ` "free
refreshments on the.party'bus".
Trustees agreed at their
December 18 meeting. in
Hanover they can't prevent
students from making travel
arrangements, but want parents
to know • information about
school -sanctioned trips will be
on authorized letterhead, : There
was also concern commercial
agencies could, use the school
name as a way of selling pack-
ages.
ackages.
"We don't want the iclioots to.
become a peddling ground for
travel agencies," said chairman
Bili Zettel.
BASKETBALL TEAM .:
TO BE RECOGNIZED
The 'Sacred •.Heart senior girls
basketball team (Walkerton) will
get special recognition from the
Bruce -Grey Separate School
Board for their recent. All On-
tario Championship title.
It's the first time a team from
the board has taken the provin-
cial gold medal, •
Team members will get an
inscribed' memento and a
,donation toward the cost of team
jackets. -
The donation sparked some
debate • from trustees ' at the
board's December 18 meeting in
Hanover who were wormed
about the cost, but it was pointed
out the board has spent .money
on other students who. have
made outstanding achievements,
including the cost of sending a
provincial science fair winner to
the Canada wide contest,
CHAIRMAN'S ADDRESS
The new chairman of the
Bruce -Grey 'Separate School
Bard touched on issues or
funding and of quality in Jas
inaugural address. •
Bill Zettel said full funding is
not yet a reality for . separate
boards because they do not have
access to commercial as-
sessment. Thatputs Et burden on
the local ratepayer.
Zettel. has Met with both Bruce
and Grey county .groups. con-
cerned about 'education costs,
and said those groups may have
the `clout' to change The funding
system.
Zettel said the board can "a-,.
pproach and/inform the
(about funding inequity) and
theY in turn can approach the
provincial government to attempt
to rectify, this inequity."
Zettel also sent out the mes
sage that he wants employers o'
look at more than just their pay
scales when contract time comes..,
around..
With demands for cost-cutting,
Zettel 'said the logical place to
look is At salaries, that make up
75-80 per cent of , the board's
expenses:.
Zettel said he's "not .naive
`enough" to think salaries will ac
tually be cut, but said savings in
that department would be more
effective than making, many
"little cuts here and there" in
other budgets,
Instead of focusing negotiations
on percentage wage increases,
Zettel said, ''W'e should take a
look atour life style, • our job
security, working conditions,
quality of students as well as the
quality of life we have become
accustom to".•
Meanwhile the board could
begin monitoring its graduates to
make sure they adjust well to
college and university life. Zettel
said students suffers "tremendous
culture shock" going tb univer-
sity, some of it from being away
from home and some of it
academic. ' ,-
"If necessary we shotild
provide more information to the
students" lb make sure they have
the necessary courses and make
a smooth transition.to university
life, he said.
