A memorable Christmas
by Sob Thompson, 'Windsor
When one has reached "three score and
ten,* many a memorable Christmas come*
to mind. I have, however chosen to share,
an account of my first Christmas away
from home.
The year was 1940 and December
found me completing basic training and a
Wireless Operators course in the Royal
Canadian Navy at ibliTax.
Shortly before Christmas I wall vividly
one beautiful winter evening. Loge snow
flakes were drifting gently down,
blanketing the ahnost deserted streets. I
was on my way back to barracks, imd
through the falling snow soft lights shone
from the windows of homes along the
Street. Occasionally a gaily decorated
Christmas Nee could be seen from a
living mom window.
A flood of memories took me back to
similar nights in Lucknow my home
'town and to my parents and our close knit
family of eight children. I recalled many
happy Christmas celebrations there* as my
parents struggled to raise us - especially
Omagh the years of the Great Depres-
sion.
As I plodded on towards the cold,
gloomy atmosphere of barracks life, a
great wave of loneliness and homesick-
ness swept over me and tears filled my
eyes.
Several days later, one of my
classmates, a young man of eighteen,
mentioned that he lived in Sydney KS.,
and although it was only a few travel
hours away, he couldn't get home for
Christmas as he was on "duty watch". I
had 4 few days off over the holidays, so
offered to switch with him. This, of
course made him very happy, and as it
tinned out, those of us remaining in bar-
racks were served a bountiful, traditional
turkey dinner.
Our training completed, our class mem-
bers were postedin early January 1941 to
various naval vessels, to commence anti-
submarine patrols and/or convoy escort
dudesioBefore the year was over I learned
of the loss at sea of two of my
classmates. One of these was the young
sailor from Sydney.
Mixed with my sadness at his death.
was feeling of thankfulness that my first
Christmas away from my home had
enabled him to spend his last one at his
home.
The Joy
of Christmas

Chrisunag is coming, are you ready, do
You Care?
Have, the yerus made you weary of the
wear and tear?
When 0 Holy Night rings out in
snowflake air,
•0 Little Town of Bethlehem may you
wish you there.
Times are tough„ wars are waging, where
is the peace' we seek?
Costs are rising, jobs declinhig, what have
we to keep? •
There must be a reason for this Christmas
season, many wonder why,
Could it be the angels singing, Angels We
linirolleard on 100?
Christmas gave us love, Away in, a
Manger, many years ago,
And no one ever need to be a stranger,
one can know
Thejoy that can be felt deep down hiside,
And peace that passes understanding will
abide.
MyTree
I can plant* tree
For a day to be
It would grow thick and green
The prettiest I have seen
You decorate it with balls and light
Oh what a beautiful sight.
