meets guidelines
HANOVER—With women in half
of its elementary principals'
Positions, the Bruce -Grey Separate
School Boani says its well on the
way to meeting provincial
guidelines on employment equity.
Bill Brown, director of education,
said the province is "very serious"
about having 50 per cent of
positions of responsibility filled by
women by the year 2000.
"If you don't believe 11, look
mesiad at the number of women
anointed in the new government,"
Brown told trustees at their Novem-
ber 27 meeting,
The good news is that a$ of Sep-
ternber, half of the separate board's
12 elementary Principal jobs have
been filled by women. Brown said
the board encourages women staff
-x• to take the train* to get those
jobs.
The board has "a large pool" of
women in teaching jobs at the
elementary level, where females
outnumber their male countelparts,
and hi some cases, Brown said) it is
just a matter of convincing those
female teachers that they have
leadership talent.
•The increase in women in ad-
ministration is already making P
' difference at principals' meetings,
with more focus on education and
the students, according to Brown.
"I think it's better," he said.
Board figures show about half the
department head positions on the
separate board are filled by women.
but at the board's two secondary
schools, the principals and vice
-
principals are male.
The board hired its fast female
superintendent two years ago. The
other three superintendents are
male.
