There are many alternatives to
F driving after you have been
drinking. Some include walking,
taking a taxi, or calling for a
sober friend'to pick you up. One
'of' the best and most popular
suggestions is the. • designated
driver system, where one mem-
ber of your. group does not con-
sumeany alcoholic beverage and.
then is safe to drive everyone
home.
Just remember, please don't
drink and drive! For your own
safety as well as others!
If you arc stopped at a RIDE
check and the officer involved
suspects you have consumed any
alcoholic beverage, they will ask
you to provide a sample of your
breath into an ALERT machine. \ This -instrument gives the officer
a general indication of how
much alcohol is actually in your
system. You will register a Pass
(green light), • a Warnellow
light), or a Fail (red light) upon
providing ,a sample. A pass
response enables you to continue
on your way. A warn results in
your driver's licence
•
suspended for a period of 12
rink an
hours. A fail response gives the
police officer reasonable and
•pr obable grounds to believe that
your blood alcohol concentration
.exceeds the legar limit.. of 80
milligrams • of alcohol in 100
millilitres of blood.
If : you register a fail, you will
be taken to a police station 'ta
provide two samples of your
breath into a breathalyser; which
will accurately determine the.
exact amount of alcohol in your
system, .
If you arestopped at a RIDE
-check and in the opinion of the
offiicer, oar ability to drive is
impai you will be arrested
ansh taken to the police station to
provide two samples of your
breath. into • a breathalyser as
above.
The offences
It is against the law to refuse to.
provide a breath sample when
demanded to so by an officer
concerning both the ALERT and
the Breathalyse: •
It is against the law to operate
or have 'care or control of a
motor vehicle when your blood
alcohol 'concentration is more
than 80 milligrams of alcohol in
100 rriilliu ties of blond; or while
yyoougare impaired by alcohol orS
In cases where a breath sample
cannot be obtained, due to injury
for example, the officer may
demand you .provide a blood
sample, to betaken by a
physician or qualified technician.

I ALWAYS HAVE THOUGHT-
- A man really is what he is while
on a vacation.
- A half truth is the worst sort of a
lie.
- Most men will be trustworthy
when we trust them.
It is a dull country where the sun
always shines.
- A little religion is a dangerous
thing.
- A man's best praying is done
