Minister opens_ new OMAF office
by Debbie Stull
WALKERTON--In 1912.the
Ontario IVIinistry of Agriculture
and Food opened ao office in a .
couple of rooms on Walkenonl
pain street. On Friday, Nov. 9,
after 78 years of service to area
fanners, the new OMAF office
was officially opened at Trillium
Court.
Since 1907, when 'the agricul-
ture representative branch
opened seven offices in the
province, "the concept of
working with people hasn't
changed. Our purpose is tO get
information and advice out to
help farmers in Ontario," said
Mac Bolton, agricultural
representative in Wailcaton.
Bruce. County's agricultural
representative in 1912 was KC
McKay and his secretary was
Rose LaFrarice, McKay. serving
'the same area as today's office
serves, used a motorcycle to get
around the county. said Bolton.
McKay would sometimes travel
by train or tent a horse and
cutter until purchasing a car in
1914.
When the first OMAF office
opened: Bruce County council
agreed to give the office a grant
of $500 per year to have the
office open. 'Inis grant still
exists today, he said.

It was the introduction of
electricity which made the big-
gest difference for farmers.
Electricity allowed them all the
conveniences such as milking
machines and gutter cleaners, he
said.
In 1913 the OMAF office
moved to the basement of the
Walkerton Public LibearY. The
main problem with that location
was the unpredictable flooding
of the Saugeen River. In 1956
the office moved again to the
upstairs of 810 Jackson Street
where it remained, expanding to
include the main floor offices,
until moving to iis ncw locatior
in August this year.
,Onti of the t situations
