LOPS students do well at cross-country
Lucknow Central Public School
students who represented their
school at two events are considered
"super stars" by their coaches Mr.
Yanke and Mr. Burkhart. On Oc-
tober 12th the whole cross-country
-
teamworkedto their full potential
at the County event held at Saugeen-
Bluffs Conservation Area. Com-
petition was fierce due to the num-
ber of students in each race and due
to the strong winds Lucknow's
team Score_ was topped by schools
stlehnsitiPlOY,,Chesley, Port Elgin
and .W.E. ThOmpsoe. However,
Some- individuals had very good
results considering that about 150
students were in each division.
Carne -Moffat was 18th for the
Tyke Girls, Sean Lougheed 6th for
Tyke Boys, Jonathan MacKinnon
18th for Junior Boys; and Heather
Askes 16th for Senior Girls.
On October 23, the entire student
"body", and. all staff at Lucknow
Central Public School heard about
something which made them very
proud. All members of the
cross-country team performed ex-
ceptionally well at the South Bruce
"Meer. Cold fall winds did not
hinder the performance of our
cross-country runners. As a team,
the Senior girls won their division
and received the banner.
Congratulations for winning first
place! Also, some individual
students had outstanding results in
their divisions. Carrie Moffat was
1st for Tyke Girls, Sean Lougheed
3rd for Tyke Boys, Jonathan MacK-
innon 1st for Junior Boys, Heather
Askes lst, with Dawne Rhody 7th
and Amy Sutherland 18th for
Senior Girls, and Mike Metzke 2nd
for Senier Boys.
The coaches wish to thank all the
students for being great sports and
representing Lucknow Public
School so well. Also a big
thank -you to the teachers and
parents who supported this program
throughout September and October.

Reading, reading and more
reading, that's what the kindergar-
tens are doing. We have made a big
colour book that we shared with the
other grades and are now taking it
home to -share with our families.
We also have made Hallowe'en
Word Books and Nursery Rhyme
Books which we enjoy sharing with
anyone who will listen to us.
October birthdays are Nigel, An-
gie, Ashley, Amber, and Jessica.
• Hallowe'en is filling us all with
excitement. We have been reading
stories and doing many crafts and
poems to celebrate Hallowe'en.
Insider Grade 1
Grade one have been doing a lot
of ."scientific" things with their
pumpkin patch this week. We have
been estimating, weighing,
measuring!, describing, comparing,in Grades 5/6. The students made%
and graphing. We have made lists two books. The Grade 5's created a

Our indoor vegetable garden is completed- the evening. The third
day was a highlight also as we saw
growing well. Hallowe en activities
have kept us busy and added ex-
citement to our work. We were so
happy to hear Lucknow has. a
recycling truck especially since we
have been learning about recycling,
reducing and reusing trash this
month!
Even though most of us have read
Charolotte's Web we're enjoying it
again.
Grade 4/5
We are doing a unit on monsters
in language arts. This involves
working on activity cards about
vampires, mummies, dragons, and
more scary creatures. The activity
cards fall into the following
_categories, creative writing, lan-
guage skills,research and pcietry.
We are having fun while we are
learning.
Grade 4
Mr. Clayton's class have been
making good use of the school
computer this month. In the icon
lab his students have used the com-
puter program "Story Mate" to
write collaborative stories and the
program "Perfect Copy" to
strengthen their language skills.
In the classroom, the Apple II
was used to create title pages and
drill spelling.
Grades 3/4
Our 3/4 class has been busy fin-
ding out many interesting facts
about light. Did you know the
moon has no light of it's own? We
are proud of our cross-country
runners Joanne, Carrie, Joey and
Michelle, Grade 3 can't wait until
next year when they can run for our
school. Our mouse. centres are
almost complete and we are looking
forward to doing some Halloween
activities next week.
Grades 5/6
There is a lot going on this week

about the history of the Natives.
Grade 6 students recently helped
do the fall clean-up for the beautiful
flower beds around our school

Grades 7/8
Last week the Grade 7 went to
the Outdoor Education Centre and
had a great time. The Grade 8's
stayed with the Grade 6's and had
a. supply teacher named Mrs.
Gilchrist. Some of the Grade 7's
and 8's are going to the Stratford
Festival on Tuesday to see' "As yon
like ie.. The Hallowe'en Dance is
going to be on Hallowe'en front '
2:00 - 3:00. The grade 8's are mit.

Mrs. Mayer's class is working on
improving their behavior so we can
have a calm, quiet polite. and
co-operative class.
Rob, Russell, and Jason are doing
a unit on cats, trucics, and vans,

the Ford Dealership next week to
pretend we are going to buy a
vehicle.
Jason and Tim enjoyed their visit
to Maitland Conservation Valley
with the Grade S's.
Rob, Tim and lawn are mastering
their musical instruments and might
soon be ready to play as a tune.
Nature Club
The nature cfub had lots of exer-
cise on Wednesday, October 24.
They visited, 'Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority" and took
part in an, "Animal Survival
