The deal gives teachers .a 7% increase in the first year and S% plus the cost of wring in the second. The cost Of living Clause kicks in if inflation goes over 5% and is capped at 9%, Director of Education, ' Bill Brown,said that will raise the averageteacher's:. salary from the current' $42,601 to. $45,200 in the first year of -the contract alone, Teacher's spokesrrtan Rick Striukas said the Board's 62 seem - day teachers voted 72% in favour. The new contract is only the second one the Separate ;Board has negotiated with its secondary teachers. Previously, the secondary, and elementary group were covered under one agreement. 'Benefits were another major item in talks that began early this year, Struikas said teachers wanted 40 days of leave a year totake part in job-related activities. That item didn't make it into the contract, but. Struikas said a compromise is in the works. Brown ; said guidelineson leave time will ' be `given to prin- cipals for implementation in January. At .the teacher's request, the Board is also drafting a policy in deal with student assault of teachers. There have .beeu a number of changes in both revenue and expense estimates for the Board, but trustees were told Tuesday they ° can expect the $25 million budget to balance by the end of the year. The Board is also. still on target with its enrolment projections, the official count tallied 4,334 students, 100 snore than last: year. Meanwhile the business department is . working on cost estimates for a multi-year capital forecast. First priority for 4991 is a new Elementary School for Owen. Sound. French Immersion • Startup grants of \ more. than $60,000 will' help the Separate ' Board set up, a French Immersion program in both its high schools, The Board now has French immer- .sion in four . elementary, schools. - Those programs have been mining - for, several years, prompting the Board to consider extending miner, sion fo the Secondary level. ,By September 1993, . the Board wants high school level French immersion in Walkerton"s Sacred Heart High School and at St Mary's in Owen Sound.
