The deal gives teachers .a 7%

day teachers voted 72% in favour.
The new contract is only the second
one the Separate ;Board has
negotiated with its secondary

and elementary group were covered
under one agreement.
'Benefits were another major item
in talks that began early this year,
Struikas said teachers wanted 40
days of leave a year totake part in
job-related activities. That item
didn't make it into the contract, but.
Struikas said a compromise is in the
works. Brown ; said guidelineson
leave time will ' be `given to prin-
cipals for implementation in
January. At .the teacher's request,
the Board is also drafting a policy
in deal with student assault of
teachers. Browniid assault isiot

Budget
With two months of the year to
go,, the Separate Board is: still
Projecting a balanced budget. There
have .beeu a number of changes in
both revenue and expense estimates
for the Board, but trustees were told
Tuesday they ° can expect the $25
million budget to balance by the
end of the year. The Board is also.
still on target with its enrolment
projections, the official count tallied
4,334 students, 100 snore than last:
year. Meanwhile the business
department is . working on cost
estimates for a multi-year capital
forecast. First priority for 4991 is a
new Elementary School for Owen.
Sound.
French Immersion
•
Startup grants of \ more. than
$60,000 will' help the Separate
' Board set up, a French Immersion
program in both its high schools,
The Board now has French immer-
.sion in four . elementary, schools.
- Those programs have been mining -
for, several years, prompting the
Board to consider extending miner,
sion fo the Secondary level. ,By
September 1993, . the Board wants
high school level French immersion
in Walkerton"s Sacred Heart High
School and at St Mary's in Owen
Sound.
Funding will come from regular

from French immersion peak, about
grade seven, Mut : Superintendent,
Bill Parent, suggested students will
stay with the program if they know
it has the "long term payoff' of
continuing at the high school level,:
Plans are to teach three compulsory
courses a year in French, depending
on what qualified teachers are
available. Parent said there will also
be "inservice" programs so that
French large teachers and
students aren't isolated from; the
test of the school community.
