The collection point this year is at the, rear of the Old Mill which is located pne mile south of Blyth on Highway No. 4. Hunters will receive an orange hat for , each .moose or deer hide they turn in and a crest for each moose, deer or bear jaw they donate. The cleaned lower jaw of a deer or moose should be brought along with the hide to the collection point. Jaws must be removed from the head. The teeth provide Ministry resource managers with an estimate of the age of the animal and the age, along with other information provided by the hunter, helpsdetermine the status of an animal population. The Ministry can then adjust, the rules which regulate the opportunities to harvest deer and moose to ensure the use is sustainable. Hides and jaws will not be accepted at the Wingham District office. The Old Mill . is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. On Friday they are open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. "The use of a commercial hide collector in Huron and Perth coun- ties will increase the quality of hide preparation and the efficient movement of hides from hunters to native people," said John Barker, General Manager of Northern Hides Incorporated. °'We are pleased that the Ministry of Natural Resources is continuingits support of this program whichallows native people to use their traditional skills to lower debt than wimp. "The Ministry is pleased that we were able to lead this long standing partnership among native people; hunters and the ministry, into this more efficient arrangement for the collection of hides," said Terry Matz, Enfor- cement Co-ordinator with the Ministry. of Natural Resources in Wingham. "Hunters have willingly accepted the task of annually providing us with the biological samples and harvest information. They understand their effort is essential for the confident management of the deer and moose herds. We are pleased with the continued sharing of management responsibility with hunters." The Ministry will continue to operate check stations during both of the Huron and Perth four day controlled gun hunts: Hunters are encouraged to bring their whole deer to a check station so the Ministry can obtain valuable biological information.
