SKI PROGRAM
The Bruce -Grey Separate School
Board's 10 -year-old. ski • program.
will be' reviewed after this year to
see if it needs any changes.
Education chainnan Ken Waechter
said the review will give parents a
chance to continent onthe program,
which allows students in Grades 6,
7 and .8 totake two six-week ses-
sions of ski lessons: in a three-year
period.
The . lessons are held at Happy
Valley Ski Resort in Walkerton, and
cost the board $12,710. Parents pay
$28 a student.
Figures released atthe board's
September 25 meeting show 565
students at Walkerton and Owen
Sound area schools took partin the
program in a year.

and takes fess administration time
from staff than usual fend Wising
efforts.
In return; the schools: can order
the equipment and programs they
need, as long as _ they are eonu,
patiible with the board's existing
IBM equipment.
"If the average fumy ac-
cumulates seven.UPC's a week, the
goalis attainable," Parent said.
Trustees were told a school with
325 students can. expect to collect
enough symbolsand points to earn
two IBM computers and programs.
The computers for Kids. Program
runs from September to March
1991. .
"It could be worth $30,000
board :wide," said Parent. "That's
pretty conservative," he added. "It
may be $50,000 to $60,000.".
Parent said he already discussed
the program with computer teachers
in the schools, and they are en-
thusiastic about the idea.. In fact,
trustees were told some . teachers
wereready to sign up their schools
right away, but had " to wait . for
trustee approval of the campaign.

Donated hides and jaw
collections may be left
in Blyth this year
Deer and moose hunters living in
Huron and Perth counties can con-
tinue to donate their hides as in
1989. The collection point this year
is at the, rear of the Old Mill which
is located pne mile south of Blyth
on Highway No. 4. Hunters will
receive an orange hat for , each
.moose or deer hide they turn in and
a crest for each moose, deer or bear
jaw they donate. The cleaned lower
jaw of a deer or moose should be
brought along with the hide to the
collection point. Jaws must be
removed from the head. The teeth
provide Ministry resource managers
with an estimate of the age of the
animal and the age, along with
other information provided by the
hunter, helpsdetermine the status of
an animal population. The Ministry
can then adjust, the rules which
regulate the opportunities to harvest
deer and moose to ensure the use is
sustainable. Hides and jaws will not
be accepted at the Wingham
District office. The Old Mill . is
open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from
Monday to Thursday. On Friday
they are open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"The use of a commercial hide
collector in Huron and Perth coun-
ties will increase the quality of hide
preparation and the efficient
movement of hides from hunters to
native people," said John Barker,
General Manager of Northern Hides
Incorporated. °'We are pleased that
the Ministry of Natural Resources is

Since 1969, hunters have annually
donated deer and moose hides for
the manufacturing of leather
products by native people. The
collection program was started by
the Northern Ontario Anglers and
Hunters and was subsequently run
province -wide by the Ministry of
Natural Resources. "The Ministry is
pleased that we were able to lead
this long standing partnership
among native people; hunters and
the ministry, into this more efficient
arrangement for the collection of
hides," said Terry Matz, Enfor-
cement Co-ordinator with the
Ministry. of Natural Resources in
Wingham. "Hunters have willingly
accepted the task of annually
providing us with the biological
samples and harvest information.
They understand their effort is
essential for the confident
management of the deer and moose
herds. We are pleased with the
continued sharing of management
responsibility with hunters." The
Ministry will continue to operate
check stations during both of the
Huron and Perth four day controlled
gun hunts: Hunters are encouraged
to bring their whole deer to a check
station so the Ministry can obtain
valuable biological information.
